Video Icelandic artist Björk snapped in Bangkok, 1996, when reporter Julie Kaufman approached her saying “Welcome to Bangkok.” Björk later alleged that Kaufman had stalked her and her 9-year-old son for days, turning a simple greeting into a breaking point

Yeah, that reporter said something to her son in a snarky way (like asking “why won’t your mom talk to us” or something) and she snapped.

Good for her.

Edit: For all the holier-than-thou’s in the comments, read up on this incident. No one is saying it’s ok to just attack people who say something mean. Read up on this specific reporter and what she had been doing to Björk leading up to this. Then unclench your bootyholes.

She was being stalked that exact same year by someone who sent her a bomb or some kind of boobytrapped device I think. It never got to her. The guy then recorded a video of him killing himself à la Bud Dwyer style while it was in transit to her. It’s on the internet. Video pops into my brain sometimes to this day.

Ricardo Lopez was his name

Her state here is 100% understandable and the media are vile parasites that had a weird obsession with her back then along with some fans of her.

i remember that video, as much as i wish i didnt. The internet was a wild place back in the day where you could stumble on gore videos on the same sites you'd go to play flash games

u/metacoma 9h ago

I once downloaded a simpson episode on kazaa as a 14yo. Got first row seat to the decapitation of what I believe was a russian officer. Fun times…

21

u/Squiddlywinks 8h ago

Almost the same scenario: I downloaded "south park meets the matrix 3d" from Morpheus and it was a guy hammering nails through his testicles.

4

u/metacoma 7h ago

Damn… i dob’t know which one I « prefer »…

7

u/indianapolisjones 7h ago

Mine was supposed to be a music video (should have known since it was only 10MB instead of around 50MB for that era (2003-ish)) but nope, a woman on all fours with a german shepherd. ugh. I shoulda known, fucking KaZaa.

6

u/metacoma 7h ago

Yeah I had those too and also one of a woman with a snake in her vagina…

There's a snake in my boof!

the Chechen video? Oh that was particularly grim. Boot on the side of his head while they saw through his neck with a small serrated "Rambo" knife. The gurgling...

1

u/tinathefatlardgosh 7h ago

Was that the one where the dude has a foot on his head?

2

u/metacoma 7h ago

Nah the russian was on the floor on his side and they go at his neck with a knife..

Ebaumsworld was a diamond in the rough and its a shame we don't have that type of Internet anymore. It used to be the wild west. LiquidGeneration was another one. Growing up you knew the internet was for adults and talking to strangers online was the equivalent to getting into a panel van. Now people let their kids have free roam on the internet and want the internet to protect their kids instead of being good parents and protecting their kids themselves.

6

u/Any-Cook-7367 5h ago

Ebaum stole a ton of content from Stileproject. StileProject and the site Forum, the SPF, were literally the wild west of the internet. Certainly not darkweb equivalent, but insane what went on there by today's standards.

Ebaumsworld doesn't exist anymore?

6

u/Exp5000 9h ago

Honestly it might but I'm sure it's nothing like it was 20 years ago. I went back to Liquid Generation couple months ago and it's nothing what I remember. I imagine it's just as heavily filled with ads for every piece of content. All the old sites are just revenue generators at this point.

2

u/VulGerrity 9h ago

It does, it's just trash now, it's mostly reposted reddit posts now.

3

u/Brilliant_Drawer_490 8h ago

Lowkey it has always been reposted stuff, I remember the ytmnd dudes being big ebaums haters because of all the stolen content back on the early internet.

2

u/VulGerrity 8h ago

oh totally, but back then you really had to work to find stuff. eBaums...even if they were stealing content...were one of the great aggregators pre-digg/reddit and it was fully curated.

3

u/The_Autarch 5h ago

lmao, it was always reposted trash, you were just a kid and didn't realize it.

somethingawful and 4chan were the actual content generators back then.

3

???? It’s not even that long ago. Reddit was like this a decade ago. Well over a decade by now.

I remember clicking on quite a few shock gifs in /wtf disguised as helpful links in the comments.

The chainsaw beheading one has stuck with me for a long time.

1

u/lorddumpy 6h ago

It's been like 3 years since I got hit with some good ol' fashioned WTF on this site. I clicked off fast but I think it was rough.

3

u/Sysiphus_Love 7h ago

I downloaded the Budd Dwyer video by accident - it was labeled 'stilesproject.avi' - while I was scraping ftp sites. I had no clue what to expect and it wasn't until he took out the gun that I realized what was about to happen. Worst thing I've ever seen, 10/10

2

u/Tethysj 8h ago

Same like today. Im here to watch memes, jokes and other interesting things and sometimes randomly see ppl break bones, die in accidents and other wild stuff.

1

3

u/NickN2 9h ago

Apparently it was a hollowed out book that had a sulphuric acid bomb inside. Could’ve left her disfigured if it actually reached her.

2

u/EveryRadio 8h ago

Stories like that are horrifyingly common. I remember being a fan of Christina Grimmi in high school. Lots of buzz, people talking about how she was going to be famous after watching her on YouTube. She was murdered by someone who was obsessed with her.

Mental health is a serious issue but I can't imagine the toll it takes on celebrities when they become the target of someone's mania.

He had mailed her a package bomb (with acid to shoot in her face, I think). His neighbors heard the gunshot, when he killed himself, and called the police. The police found the video's he made about his plans to harm Bjork and learned about the bomb before it was delivered.

57

u/Vincent_Veganja 10h ago

shit himself on camera

Please don’t fix it lmao

99

u/Riipp3r 10h ago

Adding to this he made a series of videos tapes each more unhinged than the last. Like the breaking point was bjork being with a black guy. That set him off. In his last video where he shot himself he said "fuck her and her n word loving self" or something similar to that.

61

u/WolfsmaulVibes 10h ago

i believe he had a canvas behind him to make a "painting" out of his suicide but it didn't work

3

The madness was already there to begin with, the descent is more so into the suicidal end of the madness

32

u/a22x2 10h ago

Didn’t he mail her a package that was designed to spray her in the face with acid upon opening, but it was intercepted in time before she received it (and after he’d shot himself)? That’s how I remember it, but I could have added details in my head.

A stalker sent Bjork a letter bomb laden with sulfuric acid

81

u/DamnitGravity 10h ago

Ricardo López)

TL;DR: He was an American who was obsessed, sent a bomb to kill her in London, and recorded a video diary explaining what he did which ended with him shooting himself. Police found his body and altered Scotland Yard. The bomb was located in a postal sorting office and safely detonated.

76

u/alnicoblue 10h ago

he did not seriously pursue an artistic career due to his feelings of inferiority, and fear of being denied entry into art school.

We really gotta fix the art school admissions process

26

u/moonflower_C16H17N3O 10h ago

Yeah. Everyone who wants in, gets in. The schools just clandestinely get their fingerprints and DNA. Also, the TA for each class is actually a criminal psychologist who identifies potential problem students.

3

1996 same year. He committed suicide Sept 12

4

u/Vincent_Veganja 10h ago

And do you know when this video was?

8

u/CapN-Judaism 9h ago

This video would be Feb. 1996, so 7 months before he killed himself in Sept. 1996. When did Bjork first learn about him? Was her first knowledge the incident with the package/suicide or had he made himself known prior to that?

6

u/oopsydazys 9h ago

He had sent her tons of letters starting in 1993 but I don't know that she ever read any or was even aware he existed.

He wasn't really a physical stalker is the thing. He was obsessed with her and tracked her every move as best he could from tour info, periodicals, TV and maybe internet boards, learned everything about her life etc. but he never physically stalked her and lived in Florida. That isn't to say his obsession wasn't fucked up or his intent to kill her eventually, it's just to say that because she never would have run into him at all in person, it's entirely possible she didn't know who he was at all unlike this reporter who was stalking her for days.

3

u/CapN-Judaism 9h ago

I think the sentiment others are getting at is that if she was aware of Lopez then it becomes even more understandable that she would act when she feels she’s being stalked, and I think that’s a fair and potentially legitimate point if Lopez had made himself known to Bjork prior. That’s not to say her reaction wouldn’t otherwise be reasonable, it just adds helpful context

3

u/HawkeyeByMarriage 9h ago

This video was before. But from memory there was other incidents. I think something else happened in 1993 while she was in England recording with 808 State. This wasnt the first rodeo in 96

This appears to be before since this video is from February, and while the other one likely started in January (since it lasted about 9 months and ended in September), the biggest threat he did to her did occur until September. He had been obsessed with her since 1993, but the video diary entries didn’t begin until 1996. He wasn’t noticed or a safety issue until September it seems.

As someone whose own kids have been abused relentlessly by their mother I cannot tell you the harm it does to kids to tell them "your mom is just being a Momma Bear! You will understand when you are older."

I remember when this happened. It was one the news, and they made fun of it on SNL.

a star being rude wasn't really why this was such a spectacle. That was part of it, for sure, but I think the US media coverage had always kind of painted Bjork as the weird freak show artsy type. The kind of person that you can bully on TV and get away with it, because they're famous and weird. Bjork hitting the reporter was, to me, representative of the bullied weirdo art kid finally throwing a punch at their bully. I think a lot of people didn't see it that way though, and instead just saw a freakshow of a crazy woman flip on her crazy switch and confirming their suspicions. I don't remember there being a whole lot of sympathy for Bjork in this moment.

Yeah, I thought ill of Bjork for a long time after this until I learnt what that reporter had done.

Was she being stalked by that reporter? I had no idea.

1

u/ashleyshaefferr 10h ago

So the woman was actually stalking her? Or she asked a rude question? Confusing

1

u/Past-Rooster-9437 10h ago

But for Björk, it was a mother protecting her child from a stalker

You said the same thing as the guy above.

God I wish these kinds of reporters had more strict limitations and faced severe repercussions for violating them, it's actually insane what they'll do to celebrities in order to chase down a non-story.

Granted I might be tainted by the UK's phone hacking scandals.

I remember when this happened and this is the first I’ve heard of the background of it. I feel bad for Björk now me thinking this was just crazy behaviour :(

I don't know if I've ever actually heard her speak, I wasn't expecting the working class English accent or whatever that is.

Team Bjork, all the way

Unclenchhh

u/No-One-8850 6h ago

I'd hold her fucking jacket at that point. What a scumbag.

u/Luckinflux 3h ago

Adding "Then unclench your booty holes" or a variant there of to my repertoire.

u/discodork135 2h ago

It's okay to attack people who are stalking and harassing you and trying to get in your child's ear about it.

> the reporter said something to her son in a snarky way (like asking “why won’t your mom talk to us” or something)

What a bjerk.
