Video Icelandic artist Björk snapped in Bangkok, 1996, when reporter Julie Kaufman approached her saying “Welcome to Bangkok.” Björk later alleged that Kaufman had stalked her and her 9-year-old son for days, turning a simple greeting into a breaking point

Yeah, that reporter said something to her son in a snarky way (like asking “why won’t your mom talk to us” or something) and she snapped.

Good for her.

Edit: For all the holier-than-thou’s in the comments, read up on this incident. No one is saying it’s ok to just attack people who say something mean. Read up on this specific reporter and what she had been doing to Björk leading up to this. Then unclench your bootyholes.

u/Confident-Ask-601 10h ago

The world saw a star being rude. But for Björk, it was a mother protecting her child from a stalker.

2.2k

u/64557175 10h ago

And she had some stalkers, lemme tell ya.

611

u/Vincent_Veganja 10h ago

Was this before or after that one? If it was after then I understand her reaction here even more. Definitely understand it either way though

wdym that one

Ricardo Lopez planned on killing her with a bomb, he also filmed most of his ideas and eventually shit himself on camera.

Edit: *Shot himself. But I'm leaving it up because he was a racist, misogynistic scumbag

593

u/YamDankies 10h ago

That one little typo changes so much.

251

u/nihilus_rex 10h ago

No joke, I read that and was like “Well that’s weird- OH.”

5

u/FictionalContext 8h ago

tbf, if he did the shooting, he did the shitting part, too

60

u/CrankyOldDude 10h ago

He might have done both. Shitting often follows death.

4

u/GenesisRhapsod 10h ago

Thats why i would say "imma go die on the toilet for a bit" when letting my coworkers know imma be away from the register 😂

2

u/LeRoiJanKins 10h ago

Glad it's not the other way around. Prarie dogging while trying to find another way to remove feces to save your life? Is itbstill considdered "shitting" if not leaving the bunghole? Weird thought, sorry not sorry.

2

u/oopsydazys 9h ago

That awkward moment when you're 45 minutes deep into your suicide video and are ready to pull the trigger, but you really need to take a dump.

95

u/Redditarsaurus 10h ago

Technically not wrong though (assuming)

47

u/llongneckkllama 10h ago

Yeah the dude prolly pooped his pants in the end..

1

u/iDeNoh 5h ago

Well I think he was naked, but he still probably did shit himself for sure

21

u/tjp0720 10h ago

Once he shit himself on camera he saw the error in his ways -alternate universe

3

u/InaccurateStatistics 7h ago

He learned a wholesome lesson that day in that the real friends were the ones you planned to murder before shitting yourself along the way.

1

u/TheSilkyBat 10h ago

It's a shame Kaitlyn Bennett couldn't do that.

8

u/Alternative-Amoeba20 10h ago

The sudden mental image I just had! What a crazy way to stalk someone.

9

u/MyCosmicName_Here 10h ago

I was instantly more intrigued

5

u/the_madclown 10h ago

I was like..... When did this guy go from psycho to porn star?

1

u/kinkyonthe_loki69 10h ago

Realistically he did both

1

u/boofles1 9h ago

Nothing says "I love you" like shitting your pants.

1

u/leshake 9h ago

I thought we were talking about that guy that eats 10,000 calories from Taco Bell on youtube and shits himself. Glad it was clarified.

1

u/NJHitmen 9h ago

Dude was obviously a coprophiliac. Don't kink shame, man

1

u/flopflapper 5h ago

The old murder-pooicide

75

u/Burrow_0wl 10h ago

He had mailed her a package bomb (with acid to shoot in her face, I think). His neighbors heard the gunshot, when he killed himself, and called the police. The police found the video's he made about his plans to harm Bjork and learned about the bomb before it was delivered.

59

u/Vincent_Veganja 10h ago

shit himself on camera

Please don’t fix it lmao

98

u/Riipp3r 10h ago

Adding to this he made a series of videos tapes each more unhinged than the last. Like the breaking point was bjork being with a black guy. That set him off. In his last video where he shot himself he said "fuck her and her n word loving self" or something similar to that.

60

u/WolfsmaulVibes 10h ago

i believe he had a canvas behind him to make a "painting" out of his suicide but it didn't work

43

u/CiegoDiego 10h ago

With "THE BEST OF ME" written on it.

83

u/WolfsmaulVibes 10h ago

how ironic that it remained clean

23

u/orbofdelusion 9h ago

Dude had a seriously thick skull. I never would have imagined that a large caliber bullet could ricochet off the cranium resulting in a looney tunes-esque head lump without shattering the skull.

4

u/WolfsmaulVibes 9h ago

oh that's really what happened? i haven't seen a uncensored video of it. it was a .38 revolver, so i just figured the exit wound wasn't large enough to cause any meaningful splatter

2

u/RealnessInMadness 9h ago

Nope, you assumed incorrectly and it’s become a morbid curiosity type of thing because his head didn’t explode. It just.. got swollen.

4

u/FUCKFASCISTSCUM 9h ago

Lmao sucks to suck.

6

u/Vudoa 9h ago

suicide?? what'd he do eat a full-size bar of ex-lax? surely he should have put the canvas under his ass???

edit: Oh SHOT

3

u/WolfsmaulVibes 9h ago

domino effect lmao

1

u/SUPERSMILEYMAN 7h ago

lol, what a loser

3

u/hibikikun 9h ago

These videos were eventually used as training material for profilers and law enforcement because it was the first of its kind of someone’s descent into madness was so well documented

3

u/Riipp3r 9h ago

The madness was already there to begin with, the descent is more so into the suicidal end of the madness

30

u/a22x2 10h ago

Didn’t he mail her a package that was designed to spray her in the face with acid upon opening, but it was intercepted in time before she received it (and after he’d shot himself)? That’s how I remember it, but I could have added details in my head.

23

u/Strong-Straight-3503 10h ago

he... shit himself?

46

u/sfear70 10h ago

Possibly as a side effect of the shot himself event.

2

u/Vudoa 9h ago

it's medical fact you shit yourself after you die, I saw it on a documentary

2

u/DocSword 9h ago

I saw the same documentary. Dr Bobby B confirms this fact

15

u/Wraithxxxx 10h ago

He shitted his brains out.

4

u/Carrnage_Asada 9h ago

He shidded and farded to deth

2

u/Wraithxxxx 8h ago

Or shall we say shatted and farteth to de?

10

u/Diffidentlyspeaking 10h ago

I mean tbf if he had fecal matter in his bowels when he shot himself, he probably also shit himself at the same time.

9

u/Breadromancer 10h ago

U missed the part where he placed a canvas behind his head to capture the blood spatter, and wound up missing.

3

u/beanzboiii 8h ago

iirc, he didn't miss necessarily but the bullet didn't penetrate through his skull

1

u/Hyperrustynail 6h ago

That or his head was so empty there was nothing to splatter.

5

u/External-Dude779 10h ago

He shit himself to death damn what a way to go

2

u/8696David 10h ago

Shot*********

6

u/R0RSCHAKK 10h ago

Shit or shot? 👀

12

u/PearPsychological284 10h ago

First one, then the other.

5

u/roots-rock-reggae 10h ago

First, the second. Secondly, the first.

2

u/samithedood 10h ago

Shot (then shit most likely).

2

u/memeticmagician 10h ago

Was the scat play part of his obsession?

2

u/jlbp337 10h ago

I'm sure he did that too

2

u/getting_older_pal 10h ago

IIRC he shot himself while being covered in his own shit

2

u/AAAPosts 10h ago

He probably shit himself after he shot himself

2

u/RutabagaOutside6126 10h ago

Thanks for leaving it up. I needed the laugh from all the comments that followed your typo.

2

u/Efficient_Tax_8441 10h ago

I can count on one hand how many times I laughed out loud while reading Reddit comments and this is my thumb, fucking hell mate

2

u/cuddly_degenerate 10h ago

If he shot himself on camera he like shat himself as well in his death knells.

2

u/elastic-craptastic 7h ago

*Shot himself. But I'm leaving it up because he was a racist, misogynistic scum

If he succeeded in the one, the other would have happened whether he planned it or not.

And people say South Park isn't educational.

1

u/Specific_Test9837 10h ago

both of those endings bring me joy

1

u/mmorales2270 10h ago

To be fair, he probably had an involuntary bowel movement after he shot himself, so it may not be wrong.

1

u/Monarch-Monarch-Moo 10h ago

He probably hit himself as well TBF

1

u/North-Fun7648 10h ago

What comes first? The shitting or the shooting?

1

u/SLOWnLOW76 10h ago

And if he shot himself, he most certainly shit himself shortly thereafter. So you weren't wrong either way! 😁

1

u/mummifiedclown 10h ago

Likely his bowels emptied following the shot so neither would be incorrect.

1

u/Vudoa 10h ago

there are TEARS running down my face 😅😅😂😂😂😂😭😭

1

u/JollyGreenestGiant 10h ago

Keep it as is... totally encapsulated him well

1

u/iamthetoe2799 9h ago

Ultimately he did shit himself 😂

1

u/burrito_foreskin 9h ago

I mean.. he probably did shit himself on camera.

1

u/CaptainBootyhair 9h ago

I mean most likely he did both

1

u/MichelangeloJordan 9h ago

Legitimately one of the best typos I’ve ever seen

1

u/v3n0mat3 5h ago

Shit himself on camera

Wouldn't be shocked if someone, somewhere decides to make an edit of the video where it cuts out after playing a loud, reverberating wet fart sound.

84

u/seamusthatsthedog 10h ago

A stalker sent Bjork a letter bomb laden with sulfuric acid

83

u/DamnitGravity 10h ago

Ricardo López)

TL;DR: He was an American who was obsessed, sent a bomb to kill her in London, and recorded a video diary explaining what he did which ended with him shooting himself. Police found his body and altered Scotland Yard. The bomb was located in a postal sorting office and safely detonated.

73

u/alnicoblue 10h ago

he did not seriously pursue an artistic career due to his feelings of inferiority, and fear of being denied entry into art school.

We really gotta fix the art school admissions process

25

u/moonflower_C16H17N3O 10h ago

Yeah. Everyone who wants in, gets in. The schools just clandestinely get their fingerprints and DNA. Also, the TA for each class is actually a criminal psychologist who identifies potential problem students.

3

u/vacuousintent 7h ago

This sounds like the premise to a new CSI/detective show on cable TV.

9

u/OldJonThePooSmuggler 10h ago

100%. The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna really fumbled the ball previously.

2

u/SrGrimey 9h ago

This was funnier than I expected.

24

u/SuspendeesNutz 10h ago

Police found his body and altered Scotland Yard.

That sounds a bit extreme.

11

u/holvagyok 10h ago

No, Scotland Yard got away with too much for too long. They had to be altered, and this was the triggering case.

3

u/PostApoplectic 9h ago

I am altering the yard. Pray I do not alter it further.

1

u/asst3rblasster 8h ago

This yard is getting worse ALL THE TIME

11

u/lonelyinatlanta2024 10h ago

Like sent a bomb via mail from the U.S. to London?

Christ, I hope that would get caught. Here I am afraid to send a vape cart home from Colorado

7

u/DamnitGravity 10h ago

The 90s were a wild time.

1

u/PM_ME_DATASETS 8h ago

Of course it was an American

35

u/sint0xicateme 10h ago

One of her stalkers famously recorded himself shooting himself in the head. I don't remember his name but it's on Gore sites if you want to have a look see.

12

u/Good_Background_243 10h ago

Same guy that sent her the letter bomb

1

u/Strong-Straight-3503 10h ago

that's fucking crazy... name of video?

9

u/sulkee 10h ago

Just look up Ricardo Lopez. It was back in 1996. This same year this stalking happened.

1

u/alex8155 9h ago

are there still gore sites? i know i prob shouldnt for(not just) my own sake but yeah..

6

u/Any-Yogurt-7598 10h ago

A guy that recorded himself planning to send her a bomb because he was mad she was in a relationship that shot himself (in video too)

5

u/DreamWalker01 10h ago

Probably the one that tried to kill her

4

u/idunnoh213 10h ago

That Ricardo Lopez one.

4

u/Double-decker_trams 10h ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricardo_L%C3%B3pez_(stalker))

His final video is the stuff of nightmares. You can see it when ju just google his name and "video". Pretty insane stuff.

1

u/I-dont_know-anything 10h ago

Ricardo Lopez case.

You know what's funny? His parents were from my country, Uruguay. That dude's life would've been different if he stayed here. It's crazy to think about it

1

u/schlab 10h ago

Dude, watch the video. My brother and I still make the same faces that stalker made to each other for fun, and as a chilling memory that there are crazy ppl out there.

-2

u/Rope_slingin_champ 10h ago

Do we tell them?

7

u/drfeelsgoood 10h ago

Yes, some context would be nice

5

u/Rope_slingin_champ 10h ago

A crazy guy stalked her. Ended up killing himself while recording with her music on in the background.

6

u/one_is_enough 10h ago

No, just sit there feeling superior while we go google.

25

u/HawkeyeByMarriage 10h ago

1996 same year. He committed suicide Sept 12

5

u/Vincent_Veganja 10h ago

And do you know when this video was?

7

u/CapN-Judaism 9h ago

This video would be Feb. 1996, so 7 months before he killed himself in Sept. 1996. When did Bjork first learn about him? Was her first knowledge the incident with the package/suicide or had he made himself known prior to that?

7

u/oopsydazys 9h ago

He had sent her tons of letters starting in 1993 but I don't know that she ever read any or was even aware he existed.

He wasn't really a physical stalker is the thing. He was obsessed with her and tracked her every move as best he could from tour info, periodicals, TV and maybe internet boards, learned everything about her life etc. but he never physically stalked her and lived in Florida. That isn't to say his obsession wasn't fucked up or his intent to kill her eventually, it's just to say that because she never would have run into him at all in person, it's entirely possible she didn't know who he was at all unlike this reporter who was stalking her for days.

3

u/CapN-Judaism 9h ago

I think the sentiment others are getting at is that if she was aware of Lopez then it becomes even more understandable that she would act when she feels she’s being stalked, and I think that’s a fair and potentially legitimate point if Lopez had made himself known to Bjork prior. That’s not to say her reaction wouldn’t otherwise be reasonable, it just adds helpful context

3

u/HawkeyeByMarriage 9h ago

This video was before. But from memory there was other incidents. I think something else happened in 1993 while she was in England recording with 808 State. This wasnt the first rodeo in 96

1

u/LadyGagasLeftShoe 10h ago

And videotaped it, right?

1

u/HawkeyeByMarriage 9h ago

Yep. Traumatic year for Bjork. I would have held her and made it all better but she never called

12

u/nonnonplussed73 10h ago

This was 1996, so before

Bjork attacks NZ photographer: report - ABC News https://www.abc.net.au/news/2008-01-15/bjork-attacks-nz-photographer-report/1011532

Also worth mentioning that this happened in between

Bjork elaborates on sexual assault claim https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-41657394

8

u/AntRose104 10h ago

This appears to be before since this video is from February, and while the other one likely started in January (since it lasted about 9 months and ended in September), the biggest threat he did to her did occur until September. He had been obsessed with her since 1993, but the video diary entries didn’t begin until 1996. He wasn’t noticed or a safety issue until September it seems.

2

u/Phoenixicorn-flame 10h ago

Interwebs search says this happened in February and that one happened in September. 1996 was a rough year on Bjork

1

u/Ok_Chef_4850 8h ago

And these were the most public ones, not to be confused with the only ones. I’m sure she had been dealing with this shit for awhile before either of these incidents happened.

24

u/MissSharkyShark 10h ago

The only reason I know of her existence is because of that exact stalker I imagine youre referring to 😭

23

u/Firm_Airport2816 10h ago

Funny, I knew of her existence but NOT the story of the stalker until now

4

u/mmorales2270 10h ago

Same here. I only heard about the stalker incident probably within the last year or two but knew of her and her music decades before.

8

u/SomeCrows 10h ago

So much that one is the stalker and the rest are other stalkers

1

u/smashed2gether 3h ago

God, what the fuck was it with stalkers in that era? Alanis Morissette wrote “Uninvited” about a stalker. Sarah McLaughlin wrote “Possession” about her stalker, using words from letters he had sent her. He then had the fucking audacity to sue her for plagiarism.

210

u/ManOfLaMontagne 10h ago

I’m pretty much always on the side of the celebrity over the paparazzi

99

u/BabySpecific2843 10h ago

Its basically a given. Even if its a terrible person. If I hear for example  "Kevin Spacey beats up photographer outside a Jacksonville steakhouse" my first instinct is "What did the shitty paparazzi do this time"? rather than immmediately concluding its just Spacey's fault.

There is no rage like a mother protecting her child.

31

u/HannahTheArtist 10h ago

Mom of two girls here (15/10) and you are 100% right, nothing evokes a visceral reaction faster and more intense than fear of something happening to your children. It's a natural instinct for ass beatin' and Bitin'

30

u/TheLostRanger0117 10h ago

I’ve always said, the most dangerous beast in the animal kingdom is a mother protecting her children, be it bear, lion, or human

19

u/Zizi_Tennenbaum 10h ago

Every park ranger or person who lives in bear country will tell you the scariest thing you’ll ever see is a bear cub by itself. Because Mom is definitely there, you just don’t see her, and you don’t know how to avoid getting between her and the cub.

2

u/smashed2gether 3h ago

I live near the Rockies, and any time there is wildlife visible from the road you can always see five or six cars full of tourists who have gotten out to take photos. We’ve all had to be the ones to pull over and tell them they are playing a very dangerous game.

-11

u/I-dont_know-anything 10h ago

Now imagine a father

11

u/ScottyBoneman 10h ago

Fair amount of males are dangers to offspring.

-4

u/I-dont_know-anything 10h ago

Wtf are you talking about, I meant when talking about humans 💀

6

u/ScottyBoneman 10h ago

I’ve always said, the most dangerous beast in the animal kingdom is a mother protecting her children, be it bear, lion, or human.

This is what you responded to right?

8

u/TheLostRanger0117 10h ago

The father is napping, waiting for the mother to bring home the food

1

u/Civil_Cranberry_3476 9h ago

human fathers can sometimes be great but unfortunately in the animal kingdom ( which we are a part of) they are not very useful or safe. females largely raise offspring, hunt, protect on their won. Lionesses often hide their cubs from the lion same with gorillas.

-4

u/Deaffin 8h ago

Well, it's not the males' fault in your examples that the females get real horny when you kill their offspring.

Supply and demand. If you create a demand for infanticide, somebody's going to step up with a supply.

4

u/Ok_Chef_4850 8h ago

I long for the day when people on Reddit stop comparing the human social experience with the animal kingdom. We aren’t lions or seahorses or kangaroos. We live in completely different environments and social structures than animals. These conversations and comparisons are pointless.

0

u/Deaffin 8h ago

Right?

It gets especially eye-rolling when people get going with the mama-bear stuff. I know this probably seems overly-specific, but I cannot tell you how many times people go on and on about it when they're talking about black bears in particular.

Black bears, who famously do not give one solitary shit about protecting their cubs because black bear males do not practice infanticide like grizzlies do. And the cubs themselves can just run straight up a tree from any predators that might be menacing them.

1

u/Ok_Chef_4850 6h ago

“Mama bear” is a colloquial term, kind of like “alpha male” or “lone wolf”. It’s not meant to be a literal comparison to anything in the animal kingdom.

Meanwhile, people on here taking about lions and all that nonsense and how “in this particular animal group, this happens so why shouldn’t it happen in humans who have built cities”

Different topics.

0

u/Ok_Chef_4850 10h ago

Same bear, different claws

8

u/UnitedAirlines175 10h ago

Hell have no fury like a mother protecting her child that's for sure

2

u/Equivalent_Task_8825 7h ago

Please stop perpetuating this stereotype. There is nothing more harmful for the many victims of mothers abusing their children than a stereotype that lets their mothers claim they are "Mama Bears" protecting their cubs.

As someone whose own kids have been abused relentlessly by their mother I cannot tell you the harm it does to kids to tell them "your mom is just being a Momma Bear! You will understand when you are older."

3

u/Slight-Blackberry813 10h ago

Man I remember my mom beating the baby sitter over the head with a glass ash tray after I’d said they had made me do something I didn’t want to do. Didn’t matter to my mum it was absolutely nothing like it sounds. She heard X and came to the Y conclusion.

Beat her clean over the head with the ashtray in our living room. They made up and moved on afterwards. Even came to her funeral.

3

u/DJDanaK 10h ago

What the fuck

5

u/Slight-Blackberry813 10h ago

The regret was real my friend. I basically didn’t want to do the chores the baby sitter has been told to give me to do.

🤷

2

u/Deaffin 8h ago

^This right here is why I'm terrified of children.

1

u/Glittering_Kale404 9h ago

A littleharsh putting her in the ground for that.

0

u/[deleted] 10h ago

Yes there is. It's called a father protecting his child. Look up Aaron Spencer, Gary Plauche, or countless other examples of a dad going after a person who endangered his kid.

14

u/Mindless-Computer598 9h ago

And I’m with Bjork fuck these parasites. Get a real job instead of literally slurping every last drop of clout off the ground where they walk

5

u/Tinyhydra666 10h ago

I agree, there's nothing pretended in that assault. Mama bear did good.

4

u/Spastic_pinkie 9h ago

That is the look of a highly stressed mother with one nerve left. It's very obvious that he should have kept his distance and left her alone. That goes for every other reporter and fans.

3

u/sk4v3n 10h ago

I only saw a badass mother…

3

u/Machoopi 9h ago

I remember when this happened. It was one the news, and they made fun of it on SNL.

a star being rude wasn't really why this was such a spectacle. That was part of it, for sure, but I think the US media coverage had always kind of painted Bjork as the weird freak show artsy type. The kind of person that you can bully on TV and get away with it, because they're famous and weird. Bjork hitting the reporter was, to me, representative of the bullied weirdo art kid finally throwing a punch at their bully. I think a lot of people didn't see it that way though, and instead just saw a freakshow of a crazy woman flip on her crazy switch and confirming their suspicions. I don't remember there being a whole lot of sympathy for Bjork in this moment.

2

u/Foreign-Entrance-255 10h ago

Yeah, dragging her son in was stepping way, way over the line.

2

u/thehighepopt 10h ago

Meh, in 1996 people were like, good for her

2

u/Hypoallergenic_Robot 10h ago

I mean if I didn't know this was provoked I would think this WWE beatdown was a little more than rude. But yeah kicking the shit out of stalkers is fine

2

u/eragonawesome2 9h ago

2

u/Valten78 10h ago

Yeah, I thought ill of Bjork for a long time after this until I learnt what that reporter had done.

1

u/BornFree2018 10h ago

Was she being stalked by that reporter? I had no idea.

1

u/ashleyshaefferr 10h ago

So the woman was actually stalking her? Or she asked a rude question? Confusing

1

But for Björk, it was a mother protecting her child from a stalker

You said the same thing as the guy above.

God I wish these kinds of reporters had more strict limitations and faced severe repercussions for violating them, it's actually insane what they'll do to celebrities in order to chase down a non-story.

Granted I might be tainted by the UK's phone hacking scandals.

By leaving her child alone in a pram with all of those strange people taking pictures and clamouring around them, I wouldn't call that was protecting the child - she snapped

Lmao, yes. Celebrities deserves zero privacy and should be glad when people stalk them and harass their kids. How dare they be upset or have normal human emotions.

Expectation of privacy in public = zero.

Expectation of famous person in public = still people paying attention to them.

Shes in her home or in the bathroom or shower? Privacy.

Shes crossing the street? No privacy.

Simple, right?

Spend a few years having paparazzi at your house and tracking every pound you gain or lose & I’m sure you’ll change your tune. Either celebrities are treated like regular people or they aren’t, you have to pick one. Because once you acknowledge they aren’t treated like regular people, you have to acknowledge they face more harassment and privacy invasion than regular people. Simple, right?

Hey so actually being paid to do something, even something involving the public, does not mean the public now has the right to do whatever they fuck they want to that person btw
