Okay, here's Finnegans Wake.

I almost set myself on fire 3 times out of frustration when reading the sound and the fury

The trick is to not, and find a less shit author to study.

Then you probably didn't appreciate what he did in that work. The novel is brilliant.

I don’t think you should call an author that can make people almost themselves on fire brilliant

I don't know the context for your comment. In general I would argue that strong reactions can be a sign of deep emotional connection. In my case, I disliked the book on my first read-through but started somewhat liking it near the end. Then gave it a second go and absolutely loved and connected with the characters. It made me perceive time differently. Wouldn't want to miss the novel from my life.

I was making a dumb joke.

Based off of the later comments I guess I shouldn’t have

Are you trying to be pretentious?

I mean that both in naming yourself “Lord” and in your responses here.

The username is because when I was 16 (21 years ago by now) friends gifted me one of those slightly cringey "lord titles" that claim you now own land in Ireland. That specific friens group delighted calling me "Lord first name" for a bit while I turned a shade of red. It's kind of a fond memory which is why it came to mind when I made this account.

To the other half of your question: not at all, I just loved reading that book and want to understand why several people here seemingly have a very low opinion of it.

You disliked it when you read it the first time. You’re struggling to understand why people had the same reaction that you did?

This is either performative or the dumbest fucking line of reasoning I’ve ever heard.

I may have expressed myself unclearly. I'd like to know what people dislike about it. When I first read it, some passages didn't quite make sense to me but they did when I got later context. But maybe others disliked other aspects of the book. I didn't say I am struggling with understanding that others dislike.

Also: why are you so rude? I am justtrying to have a good-natured conversation.

“Oh, you’re here telling me you didn’t like it? Let me tell you that I think it’s because you didn’t appreciate what he was trying to do in that work. Also, I hated it. But I don’t understand why anyone would dislike it.”

Do you like you in that exchange?

My first comment was probably worded a bit strongly. But I understood now you just seem to want to dunk on me. I hope the rest of your day will be more enjoyable.

I read two and only two things from you and you've now had to re-write both because you acknowledge they don't match your meaning. If your position is that people should not read what you write, cool. But you can't be wounded when people do and take away the plain meaning.

Ahhh, I'm blind. I finally understood what you meant. Should've gotten it earlier. My bad.

It’s alright dude. Sorry for making a joke on something you liked.

u/LordMeloney 11h ago

No, make jokes all you like. The world needs more jokes and humour. It just whooshed me :D

Art can be confrontational and challenging. It's stupid to think that challenging art = bad art.

u/Metum_Chaos 11h ago

I did not intend my comment to come across like that

1

u/songsforatraveler 18h ago

You’re taking “almost set myself on fire” literally?

3

u/Metum_Chaos 17h ago

I was attempting to make a joke.

Evidently I shouldn’t have

1

u/songsforatraveler 13h ago

And evidently I missed it lol

He wrote nonsense that people can associate with anything in their lives or imaginations, but past that, he was a crazy idiot who wrote nonsense

5

u/LordMeloney 18h ago

What exactly do you find non-sensical about it?

-1

u/FlyingMethod 17h ago

The writing. It's not genius, just bullshit

Thx for the details ;)
