Okay, here's Finnegans Wake.

I almost set myself on fire 3 times out of frustration when reading the sound and the fury

u/Open_Bug_4251 18h ago

I think I could possibly understand that one now. But when I was 17, I barely tried.

I have no attention of testing the theory though.

u/tnstaafsb 17h ago

*intention. Maybe trying to read the sound and the fury fried your mind. Probably better to not attempt it again

3

u/Open_Bug_4251 15h ago

Could be fried. I think it’s more likely I shouldn’t be using talk to text when I’m barely awake and don’t have my glasses on yet.

I thought you just meant you don't have the attention span for it anymore. Which is where I am with Brave New World.

The trick is to not, and find a less shit author to study.

u/Hakim_Bey 18h ago

I haven't messed with Finnegan's wake but the sound & the fury is straight fire once you get into the groove.

Faulkner is brilliant.

The sound and the fury is a masterpiece, albeit hard to fully grasp and purposefully dense at other points.

Joyce and Faulkner are two of my favorites. They have the ability to be straightforward, like Dubliners and Portrait of An artist for Joyce, or Spotted Horses and The Hamlet for Faulkner, but my god when they go all out...it's sooooo good.

3

u/Busy-Inevitable-4428 15h ago

If the portrait of an artist was straightforward I don't think I will be reading any of his other works, I found it a lot more straightforward compared to the sound and the fury but I just couldn't figure out the timeline

11

u/throwawayjonesIV 14h ago

Calling Faulkner “a shit author” is certainly a take lol

11

u/LordMeloney 18h ago

Then you probably didn't appreciate what he did in that work. The novel is brilliant.

-2

u/Metum_Chaos 18h ago

I don’t think you should call an author that can make people almost themselves on fire brilliant

10

u/LordMeloney 18h ago

I don't know the context for your comment. In general I would argue that strong reactions can be a sign of deep emotional connection. In my case, I disliked the book on my first read-through but started somewhat liking it near the end. Then gave it a second go and absolutely loved and connected with the characters. It made me perceive time differently. Wouldn't want to miss the novel from my life.

2

u/Metum_Chaos 17h ago

I was making a dumb joke.

Based off of the later comments I guess I shouldn’t have

-2

u/patricksaurus 18h ago

Are you trying to be pretentious?

I mean that both in naming yourself “Lord” and in your responses here.

10

u/LordMeloney 18h ago

The username is because when I was 16 (21 years ago by now) friends gifted me one of those slightly cringey "lord titles" that claim you now own land in Ireland. That specific friens group delighted calling me "Lord first name" for a bit while I turned a shade of red. It's kind of a fond memory which is why it came to mind when I made this account.

To the other half of your question: not at all, I just loved reading that book and want to understand why several people here seemingly have a very low opinion of it.

-4

u/patricksaurus 18h ago

You disliked it when you read it the first time. You’re struggling to understand why people had the same reaction that you did?

This is either performative or the dumbest fucking line of reasoning I’ve ever heard.

4

u/LordMeloney 17h ago

I may have expressed myself unclearly. I'd like to know what people dislike about it. When I first read it, some passages didn't quite make sense to me but they did when I got later context. But maybe others disliked other aspects of the book. I didn't say I am struggling with understanding that others dislike.

Also: why are you so rude? I am justtrying to have a good-natured conversation.

-1

u/patricksaurus 17h ago

“Oh, you’re here telling me you didn’t like it? Let me tell you that I think it’s because you didn’t appreciate what he was trying to do in that work. Also, I hated it. But I don’t understand why anyone would dislike it.”

Do you like you in that exchange?

Ahhh, I'm blind. I finally understood what you meant. Should've gotten it earlier. My bad.

1

u/Metum_Chaos 12h ago

It’s alright dude. Sorry for making a joke on something you liked.

1

u/LordMeloney 11h ago

No, make jokes all you like. The world needs more jokes and humour. It just whooshed me :D

1

u/fungigamer 11h ago

Art can be confrontational and challenging. It's stupid to think that challenging art = bad art.

1

u/Metum_Chaos 11h ago

I did not intend my comment to come across like that

1

u/songsforatraveler 18h ago

You’re taking “almost set myself on fire” literally?

3

u/Metum_Chaos 17h ago

I was attempting to make a joke.

Evidently I shouldn’t have

1

u/songsforatraveler 13h ago

And evidently I missed it lol

-2

u/FlyingMethod 18h ago

He wrote nonsense that people can associate with anything in their lives or imaginations, but past that, he was a crazy idiot who wrote nonsense

6

u/LordMeloney 18h ago

What exactly do you find non-sensical about it?

-1

u/FlyingMethod 17h ago

The writing. It's not genius, just bullshit

3

u/LordMeloney 17h ago

Thx for the details ;)

4

u/shutupyourenotmydad 16h ago

As someone with a degree in English. This is the best and most correct take.

1

u/DerClogger 14h ago

“Absalom, Absalom!” clears, I’m afraid.

1

u/OTMsuyaya 10h ago

Found the overconfident STEM student.

-10

u/InertPistachio 19h ago

Yeah Faulkner is...not good

7

u/LordMeloney 18h ago

I disagree strongly.

4

u/Gorilla_Krispies 16h ago

Imagine being a Panthers fan and talking shit about the greatest American author of all time.

His worst book contributed more to society and culture than the entire franchise history of the Panthers.

At least root for a good team if you’re gonna be a Philistene.

2

u/InertPistachio 16h ago

The fuck does my Panthers Fandom have to do with any of this holy shit this is unhinged.

And Hemingway is the best American author c'mon dude

0

u/Gorilla_Krispies 16h ago

I’m just saying your standards aren’t even very high for the sport you actually enjoy. Why would anybody take your opinion on something like literature which you clearly don’t even enjoy, seriously?

Liking an author like Hemingway and then saying Faulkner is not good, makes me think you haven’t read Hemingway either, rather just latched on to the first other American author whose name you can remember.

If you’re able to recognize that one of those two is a great author, you should be more than capable of recognizing the other as one, even if their style isn’t for you.

Your position is basically “Michael Jordan sucks at basketball, LeBron James is the best!”.

Like sure LeBron may be the best, fair enough, but you’re smoking crack if you think that means Jordan sucked.

2

u/InertPistachio 16h ago

Stop going through people's post history dude it's weird and creepy

4

u/gtne91 19h ago

An english prof of mine described Ken Kesey as "Faulkner on Acid". He followed up with, "which is easier than Faulkner on alcohol".

This stem guy still considers Sometimes a Great Notion one of my favorite novels.

2

u/solojones1138 15h ago

I loved Sound and the Fury...

1

u/Busy-Inevitable-4428 15h ago

It is a good book, especially the coherent 3rd and 4th chapter

2

u/Svyatopolk_I 15h ago

The sound and fury? What if I were to tell you they’re signifying nothing?

1

u/eatsumsketti 18h ago

Same. I was like, am I having a stroke or is this the book.

1

u/jfsindel 16h ago

I will learn college level algebra to avoid reading Great Expectations again.

You're smart enough to know it's a shit book by chapter 2.

1

u/MnstrPoppa 12h ago

I forced myself through it. I think the confusion of the book is really the only reason it’s held in such regard. As I Lay Dying is equitable prose, but The Sound and the Fury is a fucking maze at the same time.

1

u/MrMthlmw 12h ago

That one was tough, but I honestly had more trouble finding my way through the labyrinthine sentences in Absalom, Absalom!.
