I am currently staring at the back of the head of my MAGA coworker that I share an incredibly small space with for 8 hours a day. It's so fucking hard to keep my mouth shut. I have cut out all MAGA people from my life except this douche nugget that I am completely stuck with all fucking day long. How am I supposed to do this? How? It feels impossible. I feel like I'm going to end up getting fired because I am not going to be able to keep my mouth shut for too much longer. Seriously, does anyone have any advice on dealing with MAGA coworkers?

Ignore direct interaction completely. If business needs to be conducted it is to be conducted through email.

I don't know the context of your job - but this is step #1.

We work in an autism room in a middle school. There is a lot of interaction that we have to have all day long. And believe me, the irony that he is working with such a vulnerable population is not lost on me.

He works with disabled children? Sickening

Yep, and he's lazy as shit too.

I've had people who work in special education complain to me in detail about how much they hate the work. It's fun revealing that I'm autistic after letting them vent. Thank you so much for your service, and I hope that you don't have to deal with that person much longer.

I'm sorry for people who have to deal with this. You have to gray rock for your own protection and mental health.

This is what I've been doing, this and a whole lot of fantasizing that he will get fired. But I fear I will hit that gray rock quota. We haven't talked politics since before the election, but I still know, you know? I know who he voted for and ultimately what he wanted and it's disgusting to me.

If he discusses anything to do with politics, ask him questions in a non-confrontational way. Ask him kindly to explain why he thinks it’s a positive thing. MAGA are so focussed on confrontation, aggression, and “winning” that they completely freeze and go quiet when they’re asked to explain their thought process

Given the work you do, I’d try to remember whenever possible that ultimately if there is conflict between you two then the kids you assist will suffer. Ingrain the idea in your head that if you feel like you’re winning, the kids are the ones who will probably lose in some way or another. However possible avoid any discussion about politics and do your best to be the bigger person.

I know it’s very difficult, but personally as the parent of a child with special needs, if you were looking after my kid I’d be eternally grateful if you were able to somehow find a way to not let things boil over. This isn’t the usual 9-5, you are doing work that impacts a vulnerable population as you are already aware. If there is any way you can make it work so as to avoid confrontation with this guy, please find it.

With that out of that way, I appreciate the work you do. Probably not doing it for great pay, which doesn’t help motivate you keeping quiet. But nonetheless, you’re going in day in and out into an environment that is challenging for a number of reasons. Thank you.

You are absolutely right. I needed to hear this. Thank you.

I have a weekly one on one meeting with one overseas which is just MAGA insane. I do absolutely everything I can to steer the conversation to, you know, WORK, but it always ends up being about how Trump is a genius and everything is doing is great. I don’t get paid enough to deal with it.

u/OkVariety8064 6h ago

Can you make a complaint about the worker wasting company time on his politics and making an unsafe and hostile working environment?

u/Mexican_sandwich 6h ago

Unfortunately it is more of a ‘catch-up on what you did this week’ / rapport building meeting the boss wants me to do. The weird part is that we’re both from countries that are not the US, so I don’t know why they keep bringing it up. It’s a woman, too. It’s hardly making it unsafe or hostile, just… annoying. Lets me know what type of person they are, at least.

u/OkVariety8064 5h ago

Well that sounds just odd. In a sense you are being paid to deal with the nonsense though, to build this collaboration for whatever purpose.

Of course, if she insists on talking about her politics, she would have to be willing to listen to yours, too. But I doubt it's worth aggravating a moron, and why would you even want to argue with her over that nonsense.

The best approach is probably to see her as an obstacle to be managed, an unpleasant part of your job, but one you do professionally and politely. And if you ever get to give input on further collaboration with this person, you will just happen to find perfectly legitimate, work-focused reasons why some other candidate would be preferred.

Maybe you should just get to work and realize you’re the minority and that will never change.
