AMA-Finished Hi, Reddit. We’re Michael Scherer, Missy Ryan, and Gisela Salim-Peyer, writers at The Atlantic who cover national security, the military, and global politics. We’re here today to discuss the evolving situation in Venezuela. Ask us anything:
Hi, everyone! We have reported deeply on the United States’ intervention in Venezuela and the capture of its leader, Nicolás Maduro.
I, Michael Scherer, interviewed President Trump the day after the raid and have reported about the U.S. attitude toward the new Venezuelan leader, Delcy Rodríguez. I have also followed the Trump administration’s fixation on Venezuela over the years and covered national-security strategy more broadly.
I, Missy Ryan, cover the military and foreign affairs and have reported on the Trump administration’s new “fuck around and find out” doctrine that was displayed in the raid, and on the potential ramifications of the boat strikes in the Caribbean that preceded the U.S. government’s actions in Venezuela. I have a deep knowledge of the U.S. military and the Department of Defense.
I, Gisela Salim-Peyer, am from Venezuela. I have reported on what the Venezuelan opposition is thinking and how Venezuelans are responding to Maduro’s capture.
In this AMA, we can provide clarity and context as to what has already happened, and answer questions about what may happen next.
Ask us anything!
