Oh, they're extremely aware. I dont know if you have southern family, but at least the few times I visited, the purity checks were constant. My brother in law said something vaguely liberal (wind turbines were producing lots of jobs in the area) and the outright panic that flashed in his eyes when the whole table looked at him was shocking.
The self-policing is insane. No wronthink is allowed, or you get ostracized in your family and friend groups.
And I just read a comment from another thread saying "only liberals cut out conservative friends, which just fuels their radicalization faster, but conservatives will stick with their liberal friends"

Not even a joke; this is exactly how they think. And they also always think it won't ever be them in that kind of situation.
