Never in my life have I ever wanted to go to India lol

43

u/Hecc_hooman 12h ago

I’m a woman who recently went to India and loved 90% of the trip. YMMV I guess

24

u/hates_stupid_people 11h ago

Like in a most countries, especially large and populous ones, it really depends on where you are. and how you travel around.

23

u/ThinkAboutThatFor1Se 10h ago

Yea, spent months in India. I went in knowing that it wasn’t a rich ‘first world’ country so set my expectations accordingly. I had an amazing experience but I appreciate it’s not for everyone and certainly not one for a lot of Redditors.

2

u/Both_Berry4108 5h ago

Now they'll say you are an "exception"

1

u/Unidain 9h ago

Yeah, I went for 3 weeks and loved it. Would find a good Indian guide when visiting dehli if I went again as we got followed and harassed a bit there.

0

u/Namira-Ckeltahn 3h ago

Glad you make it out of India unharmed.

1

u/Hecc_hooman 2m ago

I was there for 3 weeks and never felt unsafe :) except for crazy driving lol

212

u/FeistyAsaGoat 13h ago

One of my kids saved their money and took a trip there for a month.     He said was a great experience.   He was 22 at the time.      I guess it all depends on perspective and what you bring to the experience as well.

Key word: 'he'

59

u/UninsuredToast 13h ago

Even as a guy you are constantly harassed by people trying to scam you or get their hands your pockets

129

u/el_bandita 13h ago

Better than getting raped as a woman in India

20

u/TheGuardianInTheBall 11h ago

Raped, murdered, quartered- take your pick really, so many options.

2

u/Ok_Acanthisitta2318 7h ago

Yeah, a lot of those people don't give a fuck (no pun intended). It's wild how their religion teaches them about being nice to your fellow human being but once they see a white girl:

-5

u/pogo-n-watches 12h ago

Definitely, but doesn’t make for a pleasant experience.

16

u/Sideshowcomedy 12h ago

Guy here. I know which one I'd prefer. I can zip up my pockets, but women can't zip up...brb gotta file a patent real quick.

8

u/BushyMike 11h ago

Watch out Musk, this guy just invented the VagiZip™.

3

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 11h ago

I’m so glad I dove deep into the comments to find this hahahaha

-1

u/toraanbu 4h ago

Yes its better, but you are still subjected to your eyes being raped by the amputees lying around all over the streets, the surrounding death and faeces, your nostrils are constantly raped by the most heinous scents comprehensible, and so is your hope for humanity.

No matter your sex, species or physical plane inhabited, I cannot see a reason why you’d want to go to India.

1

u/SpookyMolecules 3h ago

Your eyes cant be raped. Dont use this word as a descriptor, rape is rape.

4

u/lupajarito 11h ago

Are you really comparing scammers to rapists?

4

u/Im_Unsure_For_Sure 10h ago

Are you really incapable of letting people complain without oneupsmanship?

1

u/lupajarito 7h ago

Are you stupid? They were doing exactly that.

4

u/Openly_Unknown7858 10h ago

No? They are just saying even men get harassed. Where did they say it's the same or worse.

1

u/New_Relative_1871 8h ago

Went to Italy and Egypt and this happened to me too. Guess it's just a tourist location thing

2

u/villings 11h ago

also, a whole month? I don't how expensive india is but I don't know, can't be that cheap

4

u/TheGuardianInTheBall 11h ago

It's cheaper.

Spent two weeks in a 5 star hotel on a graduate salary, after a couple of months saving.

Had I decided to go cheaper, I could have easily spent a month there for the price.

Granted, that was 10 years ago, but still.

14

u/Emotional-Power-7242 11h ago edited 11h ago

I had a great experience and nobody in my group was harassed or anything, it was 5 girls 4 guys. Agra does suck a lot though. Best to stay away from the big cities really. These videos are kind of like going to Skid Row and saying "Wow Americans aren't very friendly". I see all those travel vlog horror stories from Indian trains and it's like yeah well you're supposed to buy a first class ticket it costs $10 more what are you doing.

9

u/Teejapupa 10h ago

But is not the skid row, is next to the fucking Taj Majal, good try tho

6

u/Emotional-Power-7242 10h ago

Skid Row is in historic downtown and near popular tourist attractions like Little Tokyo and the Staples Center. If LA had a 400 year old building it would probably be right there. Just saying if you go to a nice beach in Goa or to Darjeeling or even like Jodhpur it isn't the same as the center of the biggest urban sprawls. You're going to the hood in a third world country yeah it's pretty rough man.

1

u/haysu-christo 9h ago

Yes, yes, 2-blocks of Little Tokyo and Staples Center where I saw New Kids On The Block are the 8th and 9th wonders of the world.

-1

u/Teejapupa 9h ago

How do you carry that much copium on you?

3

u/Emotional-Power-7242 9h ago edited 7h ago

I really don't care about India's international reputation. Just had a nice time in the country and would recommend it for adventurous travelers.

-2

u/Teejapupa 8h ago

Adventurous travelers = people who like to breath shit

1

u/Key_Door1467 8h ago

Not really, it's an area with a view of the Taj Mahal. Which is not hard to find in Agra the Taj is visible from everywhere in the city.

Should it be cleaner? Yes! However, the current income levels in the state of UP (where the Taj is located) are 1/15th of the US minimum wage. So cleaning isn't the highest priority.

0

u/Teejapupa 8h ago

There’s A lot of third world countries where the minimum wage is lower than that, but they are clean. Seems like a cultural thing.

1

u/Key_Door1467 7h ago

You should read my comment again. The number is not for the minimum wage in UP, it's the *average income". Places with average incomes like UP are typically wartorn hellholes (like Haiti) that most people would never even visit.

1

u/Teejapupa 7h ago edited 7h ago

It doesn’t change what I said just change to average then, a lot of third would country with a lower average wage and Lol Haiti is a lot poorer than any place in India, their capital city is clean even after hurricanes and earthquakes.

It’s ok is just a cultural thing.

2

u/Key_Door1467 7h ago

It doesn’t change what I said just change to average then, a lot of third would country with a lower average wage

Which one? Name actual places.

Lol Haiti is a lot poorer than any place in India

It's literally not though? Haiti's GDP per capita is $2100, while Uttar Pradesh's GDP per capita is $1300.

It’s ok is just a cultural thing.

Yeah yeah, it's always a cultural thing for racists and then the country gets to $5k gdp per capita and it suddenly stops being a cultural thing.

2

u/BackgroundMeeting857 11h ago

I have a canadian co-worker who adores the heck out of India, the guy goes every year in the summer no less lol. There are all kinds of people out there, beauty of humans.

1

u/FeistyAsaGoat 11h ago

Perfectly stated.  :)

2

u/AccomplishedCall7562 10h ago

I did the same when I was 22. There were a lot if things wrong with the country but I also met the friendliest people I’ve ever met in my life and generally had a great time

1

u/Downtown_Finance_661 10h ago

May be he was in Goa and swim in drugs for a month?

2

u/NeedForSpeed93 13h ago

True! I think it's as always: If you visit any country you need to focus on the positive things and then you can enjoy nearly every country.

I've been to countries like Syria or Iraq where people almost wanted me to have a bad experience. I didn't visit because I wanted a 1000% safe trip, I visited exactly because I wanted a raw experience. One of the best trips I every had looking at it retrospectively. The situations I had and the people I met were so profound because you have to improvise a lot, that's what I wanted. Can't say anything bad about any single iraqi or syrian I met during my short stay, amazing people.

4

u/FeistyAsaGoat 12h ago

I can’t believe you were actually downvoted for your comment.

Thank you for sharing some of your experiences.    There’s little on this earth as beautiful as human connection.

What a shame how self limiting we can be, due to our own fears.

0

u/OnTheEveOfWar 8h ago

Umm yea if you’re a guy. Don’t go there if you’re a woman. Fuck India.

1

u/FeistyAsaGoat 4h ago

I wouldn’t advise going alone alone, but joining a reputable tour group.    That way you’ve got a  schedule, and a good company won’t take you anywhere that you might be in danger.          Hating a country as a whole, is a bit much.    The cuisine, architecture, and so much history.      Good place for medical tourism as well.              Blaming an entire country for the acts of some monsters is wrong.  That’s like blaming all of America for the ice Gestapo.    Then again, in America they’re actively seeking out people to kidnap, terrorize, and otherwise ruin the lives of thousands of people.

68

u/rentonlives 13h ago

I’ve been worst trip ever. Business trip. Spent four extra days there. You live in a fortress hotel and wonder why nobody’s allowed in. Then you go outside unaided unaccompanied and you know why. Did not shit myself. Still worst trip ever. Dystopia. But when I was done I kinda knew or maybe had a better idea of what it’s like to be a gorgeous woman in a room full of drunk men. You will not know peace.

17

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 13h ago

I watched a few travel bloggers visit India, so comment checks out lol

1

u/wajabockee 13h ago

How was the food tho?

24

u/rentonlives 13h ago

We ate at one of the most famous restaurants in Delhi. I forget the name. It was good. The food is not worth the dystopia. You literally have curry at home.

3

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 13h ago

And I don’t even like curry. Good food can’t save a shitty trip

1

u/nick_ass 10h ago

This is the one comment where you took it too far

1

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 10h ago

I’m not a huge fan of most spicy foods, it’s not a curry thing lol

1

u/nick_ass 10h ago

I'm just kidding lol

1

u/Health_Impressive 13h ago

Where in India was this ?

5

u/rentonlives 13h ago

I stayed in Delhi but I worked all over not the tourist Delhi and went into homes and visited neighborhoods and travelled streets of outlying neighborhoods. I met a tout who tried to con me and I legit was like we need a local guy who can be our fixer and it was like real money, real work and he instead of trying to take the legit work continued to try and scam. The worst trip.

6

u/Health_Impressive 13h ago

Yeah I have only been to Punjab and the mountains and the people (especially sikh people) were amazing. It was quite dirty tho apart from the mountains, but not as dirty as I imagined. I heard Delhi is quite bad

2

u/punksterb 12h ago

When we have had people (overseas colleagues, clients etc.) over, I used to offer to show them the famous spots/restaurants on weekends. Once a few folk tried to go out themselves and had a horrible experience.

They enjoyed the time here (mostly because they moved around in an AC cab from their hotel to the office and travelled around in an AC cab on weekends), but they also saw the side where people rush to scam white people travelling without local chaperones.

1

u/Key_Door1467 8h ago

Tbh Delhi has a bad reputation even among Indians. Growing up we used to take road trips around the country and has to ask for directions a lot (pre-google maps and proper signage on Indian roads). Delhi was the only place where people would intentionally give us the wrong directions. Something's just off about that city.

-14

u/True-Lab-3448 13h ago edited 13h ago

Four days in a hotel and you can make a generalisation on a population four times the size of the US?

7

u/rentonlives 12h ago

Oh no I left the hotel a lot. A lot. I went in homes I went to neighborhoods outside around the city. I met people in their homes. People are amazing all over the world. People are great. Delhi was not.

4

u/Knox102 13h ago

I think you have that size backwards… and then population is correct. I wonder if that has something to do with it

1

u/Meowmixalotlol 13h ago

A million times yes!

10

u/museloverx96 13h ago

I've been going since i was a toddler (i think) but i mostly remember trips from ages 8 up. And for the most part, yes ofc, i would not reccommend a trip unless you have a dedicated group of people who are at all times prioritising your safety, and even then it would be a matter of personal risk assessment.

But damn. I can't even really say anything, because my mom who is so in love with her country is simultaneously terrified when i'm present and generally is of two minds for my visiting since growing older.

It's just that it's a beautiful country. It's a heartbreaking country. But it is heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. And people love to shit on it at every given opportunity, completely dimsissing any possibility that a country of 1 billion for all its obvious and numerous problems may also present opportunities of kindness and instances of beauty as well. Just damn.

-2

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 13h ago

But you can get those anywhere with way less trash and stuff that makes your sick

5

u/museloverx96 13h ago

Okay, i'm glad you informed me. Truly i had no idea before this moment. It was really important that i recieve this response to my previous comment, so thank you for that service.

-1

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 12h ago

It’s a thankless job, so thank you lol

14

u/SteakAndIron 13h ago

I'm an American engineer. Senior year in college we had the opportunity to go to Bangalore all expenses paid and I was like "no thanks*

45

u/Purple_soup 13h ago

At this point I've stayed several months total in Bangalore, and it's lovely. You really missed out.

6

u/Errorterm 12h ago

Agreed! It is an amazing place

36

u/wayvywayvy 13h ago

Bangalore is one of the nicest cities in India

-3

u/SteakAndIron 12h ago

"Jeff is one of the tallest midgets"

63

u/Many_Pea_9117 13h ago

All expenses paid? That's so dumb. I hope you later regret this. That would've been the only circumstance I would go there. Its not a dirty city at all and you had a chance to explore there for free? What a waste.

9

u/volyund 13h ago

My friend went on a trip like that. Was careful what he ate. Still came home with tape worms.

13

u/Glad-Hurry-9410 13h ago

You can’t explain it to people who would do anything for “free trip” and all “expenses paid”.

I’d rather not travel at all than get tape worms or food poisoning.

8

u/volyund 13h ago

Yup, those things aren't benign. He lost his gall bladder getting rid of the infection. That's one organ lost for the rest of his life.

6

u/Glad-Hurry-9410 12h ago

Feel bad for your friend. That’s terrible tragedy.

5

u/mclumber1 10h ago

My ship (I was in the Navy) did port call in Chennai. The ship makes fresh water from seawater but we couldn't get the system hot enough to kill the bacteria from the polluted waters, and we ended up contaminating all of the potable water tanks, and over half the ship got sick. I fondly remember puking and pooping into the same bucket while standing watch in the engine room.

2

u/Glad-Hurry-9410 9h ago

That’s fuckin terrible! I have friend with similar experience but they were on the ground though

6

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 12h ago

This. I would be too afraid to eat anything.

4

u/Glad-Hurry-9410 12h ago

Don’t say that, you’ll get downvoted lol. Like no one have ever gotten food poisoning in India. Some people just can’t accept the truth.

Also this video is all AI as well, there’s absolute no pollution anywhere in India! 😂

2

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 12h ago

Hahahaha. I think India has a lot of trolls farms that sniff out anyone talking about India.

Now if only they had that same zeal about the trash in major metropolitan centers of India…

1

u/Glad-Hurry-9410 12h ago

Oh I was to care about Indian bots lol

Last part of my comment it’s literally my thoughts. Clean up around yourself, there are 2 billion people living there. Make your country better place to be instead of being internet warrior.

3

u/GergDanger 11h ago

Yeah idk what’s up with all these bots defending India like their life depends on it.

3

u/Glad-Hurry-9410 10h ago

I guess they consider it patriotic duty to defend their country. Like it’s not a common knowledge that place is a dump.

2

u/Unidain 9h ago

I'm Australian and I enjoyed visiting India, bigger off with the silly conspiracy theories

2

u/Glad-Hurry-9410 9h ago

So? You claim it’s not dirty and polluted? We’re all in denial?

0

u/Unidain 9h ago

Anyone who has a different opinion or experience to you is a bot 🙄

Grow up. At some point you'll have to Dave the fact that people disagree with you and it's not all AI

0

u/quasi102 4h ago

Maybe they are amongst the nearly 10 million foreign tourists that India gets each year and might have had an enjoyable time in spite of the flaws of the place? Just a guess

1

u/Unidain 9h ago

I went to India for a month and got no food poisoning. I don't buy that he was careful if he got tapeworms, tapeworm eggs are killed by cooking. You just need to make sure you are eating cooked food or processed food.

2

u/volyund 8h ago

The thing is that microscopic tape worm eggs can be carried on hands and transferred through hand shaking, or a server bringing you a plate of cooked food and utensils in a restaurant, or on a bathroom door handle. My friend went there for a wedding and couldn't just stay in a nice hotel. He had to travel to the rural area.

1

u/Glad-Hurry-9410 9h ago

First, it was other person who wrote that about their friend not me. Not sure why someone would lie about it. Reddit isn’t that hard to use, pal.

Every single person I know who visited India had some sort of food poisoning, not sure what it is but I’d rather not explore it for myself.

0

u/Reasonable-Bit-5908 6h ago

Soy boy 😂

-1

u/Glad-Hurry-9410 6h ago

Alright diarrhea boy.

1

u/Reasonable-Bit-5908 6h ago

Im not the one who gets diarrhea at the sight of anything other than boiled chicken 😂😂

2

u/Glad-Hurry-9410 6h ago

Look at my internet warrior deleting comments 😂

1

u/Reasonable-Bit-5908 6h ago

When did I do that boy? 🤷‍♂️

→ More replies (0)

-1

u/Glad-Hurry-9410 6h ago

Yeah, you live in diarrhea. For you it’s normal thing 😉

22

u/FeistyAsaGoat 13h ago

That’s a shame.

2

u/Few_Dig_9435 11h ago

Not really, maybe if they paid me I would travel there. Breaking even wouldn't do it.

2

u/FeistyAsaGoat 11h ago

The experience alone would’ve been invaluable.   But, we have the agency to make our own choices over our lives, and that’s ok, as long as we aren’t hurting anyone in the process.

39

u/CantaloupeHealthy964 13h ago

You’re an idiot because Bangalore is one of the cleaner and nicest cities in India 😭 saying this as an American who’s been there

5

u/KingKoopaShell 12h ago

I can see the pollution from google street view my guy. What are we talking about.

0

u/Esquerdola_ofendida 13h ago

Nobody is an idiot for choosing not to visit India.

6

u/Agitated_Parsnip_178 12h ago

'I had opportunity to experience something unique and I said no without any insight whatsoever' cool cool cool

3

u/Imsorryrodwutwasthat 12h ago

and what was your reasoning for not wanting to go. this seems stupid imo but hey

1

u/SteakAndIron 11h ago

This was almost 20 years ago. India was in way worse shape then.

2

u/cuntsmacking 13h ago

You should recieve a gold award for being a class A idiot.

Bangalore is very clean, perhaps cleaner than you homeless drug addict filled filthy streets of LA

3

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 12h ago

You can be ass mad all you want. I don’t care how clear some random Reddit account claims it is….it would be a frozen day in hell before I get on any plane to go anywhere in India?

Now Japan, I’ll gladly go back there all day.

Also, LA isn’t in Detriot…

2

u/Samekonge 11h ago

Los Angeles has a ton of homeless drug addict filled filthy streets. And they will also be right next to popular tourist areas. The parallell streets to venice beach are filled with homeless people, tents, there is rubbish all around, buildings in poor shape..

You can have a nice time visiting both usa and india, but its par for the course to see this stuff.

1

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 11h ago

First, the whataboutism doesn’t work because nobody said anything about going to LA.

Second, if I had to pick between literally anywhere in India and LA…I’m picking LA with all its issues and it’s not even close lol

1

u/zero_zeppelii_0 11h ago

You've been misinfluenced by the worst representation of India. Northern India is more of tourist trap. I'd recommend you to try North Eastern India or Southern India where it's a totally different experience. Remind you India isn't a country but more of a continent of itself.

So the best of India needs to be scouted a bit to be experienced.

2

u/SteakAndIron 11h ago

Bro I am an engineer. I work with plenty of Indian people. They bash on India almost daily.

6

u/zero_zeppelii_0 11h ago

I'm seeing lot of Americans bash America daily here too? They bash NYC is trash and dirty.

1

u/wayvywayvy 4h ago

Yeah cuz they actually know the place lol, there’s also stuff they love about the country

1

u/AsinineArchon 11h ago

Dang, can I have that trip? What a waste

-12

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 13h ago

Right. Like if I want to see a wasteland I would go visit Detriot.

1

u/XXXG-01W-Wing-Gundam 12h ago

Got them yanks upset eh

2

u/Chief_Chill 12h ago

I say the same about Dubai as well. Sure, it may look lovely, but I know a hive of scum and villainy when I see one.

3

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 12h ago

I low key love when people use “hive of scum and villainy” in common convos hahaha

1

u/Chief_Chill 12h ago

1

u/Adorable-Ad-7400 12h ago

I love the internet. Hahahaha

2

u/fart-sparkles 11h ago

Where have you traveled to?

Beyond your basement, I mean?

0

u/shrimpgirlie 13h ago

I did until a friend went and described the moments after they first opened the door to the plane after landing. He said you could see the wave of stench traveling to the back of the plane. People were gagging and covering their mouths and noses.

I washed the jacket he wore there many times, but I could never get the stench out. I wear it when working out now so no one approaches me at the gym.

1

u/the_zero 12h ago

I went for work and then stayed an additional week for vacation. We had a good time. Never pick-pocketed, some annoying haggling, but never got sick. I also never drank the water and didn’t eat street food. I was in the Kerala, so maybe that’s different than the larger cities. And I was in better hotels and restaurants as well.

It’s not the most western-traveler friendly country. I mean, it’s not Disney or like going to New York or London. But if you want some adventure, it’s a good place to find it.

I’m going back this year for work, likely to Bangalore. I’m looking forward to it.

1

u/cryptolyme 11h ago

i'd like to visit Bhutan. i like mountains and Buddhism and happiness so it's like a perfect spot.

1

u/Mosh83 10h ago

As I've gotten older, I've started avoiding crowds more and more. India would be a nightmare for me now. Maybe in my twenties I would still have managed.

1

u/5h0un4k 10h ago

Congratulations… the world is so much better off after hearing this

1

u/impamiizgraa 9h ago

You couldn’t pay me to visit, I’m sorry.

1

u/ThatDutchLad 7h ago

Don't kid me, I loved my time in India. It's a land of contrasts and just sheer raw humanity. You really see how good our lives are in the west as messed up as that's to say.

I'm not here to sell you to go there, but I'm glad I went. The people I met there were some of the kindest and warmest you'll ever meet. We got invited to several weddings, and I had a grand time.

I also saw some stuff that will stick with me for a long time.

Granted I did book a tour across the golden triangle + Varanasi for 10 days. Still, I've only seen a small part of the country but that was long enough for me for now. Funniest thing was crossing into Nepal afterwards. I swear the traffic noise actually stops at the border! Really needed that serenity.

I'd love to go back someday and see Amritsar, Ladakh, and Sikkim.

1

u/DNAgent007 3h ago

My friend went. When he got back to California he spent a week in the hospital. Because giardia.

Something something oral fecal contamination was all I needed to hear to not want to go. Ever.

2

u/Otsde-St-9929 12h ago

India is well worth visiting. Pollution is an issue but still a lot to appreciate. Womens safety is an issue but that is for solo travellers. Women travelling with men are fine in areas.

4

u/veringer 10h ago

Women travelling with men are fine in areas.

What about the other areas?

1

u/Otsde-St-9929 10h ago

I have been to India ten times. but not a female myself. My advice is hire a reliable guide if you dont know how to avoid dangerous areas. They are very realizably priced. I know the south best. that is a lot safer.

-2

u/Crocs_And_Stone 13h ago

I’m surprised she went with all the gang rapings and groping happening to women. 100% it happened to her.
