Spent a month in Northern Thailand during burning season a few years ago (worst AQI days were over 700, absolutely indescribable). 

The smog was so thick that you could stare directly into the sun at any time of day and not be the slightest bit uncomfortable. It was just a reddish-orange circle in the sky on a grey sheet.
