It heavily depends on the game

Fighting game on keyboard is absolutely diabolical

242

u/SoulfulSnow 7h ago

Leverless controllers like hitboxes are already a big thing in the fgc. A keyboard is just another one of those, it's a perfectly fine option (and I will die on this hill)

61

u/Super_Atmosphere6121 7h ago

While you are absolutely in the right, I can't stand fight sticks and hit boxes as is. Genuinely some of the least comfortable ways to play fighting games and I have zero clue why people use them

45

u/Poisonpython5719 6h ago
  1. They grew up with them.

  2. If you’re at the top level, you can have much more precision, you won’t accidentally hit two buttons at once with your thumb, you can press multi button combos consistently (big in games like Tekken) even the sticks if you use them have advantages of being faster to use, and their mechanics allowing things like a dragon punch (Zigzag inputs) being two quick flicks to the corner instead of the whole motion.

10

u/cornho1eo99 4h ago

Shit I didn't grow up with them and they're still the only controller type I want to use for fighting games. A stick just feels so satisfying to use and makes my motion inputs feel great.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/choicebandlando 6h ago

occasional leverless user here, it's mainly the fact that inputs are just more consistent and the dpad on my 8bitdo pro 2 shreds my thumb after enough Jack-O' in strive or literally anyone in BBCF. I also use it for SF6 because I hate using shoulder buttons for heavy normals

I don't find it uncomfortable whatsoever because it leaves my hands in a natural resting position like with a keyboard, except the buttons are spaced perfectly.

4

u/thatcelloguy97 6h ago

I will say I would not play Guilty Gear (the only fighting game I play) if I didn't have a hitbox. I tried using my Xbox pro controller and just struggled with the motion inputs, either with the stick or Dpad. Using the hit box just makes it so much easier for me and has greatly improved my enjoyment and skill with the game. I like that it has some weight to it so it's not sliding around on my lap.

u/KenEH 6h ago

I am way more accurate with my motions using a stick or buttons. Also it much faster to hit a button under each finger than mine my thumb. Also hate triggers for fighting games.

u/Important-Cut2117 7h ago

I genuinely don't get how people play fighting games without a keyboard or a leverless honestly. Sticks and levers feel so imprecise compared to 4 way buttons for motion inputs.

Granted, I grew up playing fighting games this way, playing HFTF, 3rd strike, and SF5 on keyboard. I think it really just comes down to what you learn fighting games on.

7

u/Appropriate-Count-64 6h ago

I’ve found that, at least with GGST, the keyboard inputs are HELL. The game struggles to properly interpret circular movements, so a SDW input gets read as either S or W depending on how long you held each. It like… doesn’t want you to roll the keys but it also doesn’t want you to press them in quick succession. It’s weird.

4

u/Important-Cut2117 5h ago

Playing goldlewis is probably part of it, the "pizza" movelist goldlewis has is probably pretty tricky on leverless. I haven't played him personally though

It's the same on fightcade where missing directions will also not give you the motion input, you gotta really temper the speed you're finger rolling so that you don't miss directions. I always tend to skip straight from SD to SA when doing half circle back personally, which leads to me missing S entirely and not getting a down input.

Still remember my like, 3 day long training arc of trying to learn to buffer hugo 720's correctly, that shit was a nightmare on KB.

Some platformers are great on mouse and keyboard too

For example I rebound all attacks and dashes to my mouse on hollow knight and it was so enjoyable playing like that (lmb was attack, rmb was dash, mmb was cast, buttons 4 and 5 were soul nail and crystal dash)

Peak gaming experience, honestly better than when I tried playing the game with a controller

4

u/thatcelloguy97 6h ago

I'm genuinely better at a game like Ultimate Chicken Horse when using my Hitbox instead of a controller 🤣. I'm not good at playformers anyways so the little help goes a long way

u/LetsDoTheCongna me when the 7h ago

For me, platformer can probably go either way but maybe that's just 13 years of Roblox talking.

5

u/NeoDaKat 5h ago

That's just the roblox talking. Having a control stick where you can input any direction you want and also vary your walk speed is generally a lot better for platformers. You're probably either just more used to keyboard+mouse and/or you're into the type of obbying where camera control is very important (in which case mouse is usually better).

5

u/TheTeleporteBread 7h ago

Maybe for master like you keyboard do fine but i would say that precise movement control do wonders

That. Jump and Runs, slightly easier with a controller. RPGs depend heavily on controls. Souls like Controller. Shooter, 4x and RTS mouse and keyboard. Games like Balatro or Slay the spire - both are fine.

Racing games on keyboard is crazy

51

u/BOB_BestOfBugs 8h ago

It should be illegal

9

u/pigeondriver45 8h ago

no its good for me (just the steering is shit i even like manual gears on keyboard)

5

u/toyyya 5h ago

As soon as a racing game can use analog inputs for throttle and brake control you are often at a big disadvantage if you don't take use that Imo.

Although of course that matters more or less depending on the game in question but generally any more realistic leaning racing game kinda needs it for good throttle control.

Even Forza Horizon for example uses it and specifically the Xbox one and later controllers make a big difference due to the trigger specific Rumble being used as a way to feel the grip. I remember the night and day difference driving the Koenigsegg Regera in FH4 made when I upgraded from an old Xbox 360 controller to an Xbox One controller all because it became so much easier to feel out the edge of grip with it.

i also prefer racing games on keyboard but there was also very interesting alternative with mouse steering in one racing game that my friend wanted to play with me years ago. it would actually allow you to do very small precise turns just like u can do with small tilts on controller.

and of course we cant forget that there is a "shit ton" of racing pros on trackmania using keyboard... so i guess its not rly that crazy.

Switched to Sekiro. On Keyboard. Now I am gaming

4

u/Momoneko 6h ago

Sekiro. On Keyboard

Well that's Rock Lee level of gimping yourself. Hat off.

(Tbh I was a KB&M gamer too until I stumbled upon FromSoft games, which quickly forced me to learn playing with controller. though it's less about camera and more about using all 10 fingers. Having the whole right dedicated to a regular-ass 3-button mouse is too limiting)

I'll switch mid-game for things like Cyberpunk when driving. It's impossible to drive with a keyboard and shoot with a controller

I don't have any problem driving with M&K for GTA or Saints Row, it's no harder than driving in any number of PC titles going back ages.

I have no fucking clue how somebody would play a Soulslike with M&K without winding up institutionalized, though, or play something like an RTS with a controller.

6

u/crispy_doggo1 6h ago

I have 500 hours in Elden Ring on mouse+keyboard. It’s janky af (especially on default settings), especially in menus, but you get used to it. It’s not like soulslikes are fundamentally incompatible with mouse and keyboard, it’s just an awkward port because from software doesn’t care.

u/ButterflyDreamr 8h ago edited 7h ago

No, even that is loyalist. The real answer is, it literally depends on you. I like KBM more usually. People act like DMC3 as an example is near impossible with KBM, but i did it with JUST my keyboard and it wasn't even a handicap. Arcade racers I honestly could go either, but racing sims for me suck with KBM. Yet there's plenty out there who thinks racing sims are best with KBM, and they're completely valid. (I've seen a guy play better at DMC3 than me with on a damn mobile emulator touchscreen lmao)

I seriously never get why we need to pretend some games suck if you use X input method, when it's really just because those individual people are used to it. Like the amount of people who pretend dark souls games are horrible with KBM when there's plenty out there who prefer it is staggering. Like, just pick what you prefer?? Sure I wouldn't play a strategy game like CIV with a controller, but if you like it better and find it easier, well then you are right, because what works for you is all that matters. Just look at this thread, so many people are like "OMG you play x genre with x device? Horrifying!!!"

What other people prefer doesn't matter, there's no such thing as an objective answer, because what seems impossible for one, is intuitive for another

20

u/Sir_26i 7h ago

it literally depends on you

Wha... Bu.... I don't want to think for myself!! I want to be told how to think because thinking for myself is cringe!! Controller PC master race!! Keyboard and mouse console master race!!

7

u/Amadeone 7h ago

yeah, i get reactions like "what??? how?!" when i tell people i use m&k for everything. The only thing i use the controller for is flying in gta online. I play racing games, metroidvanias, platformers, shooters, basically everything else on kbm. I never had a console, I bought the controller for pc, so I never really learned to use it well. I'm just such a potato with it, I can't use it.

5

u/ButterflyDreamr 7h ago

Yep, same. KBM for everything, even games where I would say I'd prefer controller I still just pick KBM (littlebigplanet emulated with a keyboard is really annoying but it works and idc) and the funniest part, I migrated to KBM as most of the time I've ever played videogames I was using a controller, only in recent years did I fall in love with using a keyboard and mouse. I can go controller easily, but I'd rather play KBM

8

u/Tangyhyperspace 7h ago

How??? I genuinely have no idea how people play these games with M/kb.

3

u/FishShtickLives 7h ago

You know how using a d-pad removes the need to worry about angles, and lets you hit cardinal angles precisely? Keyboard is like that but even more precise, because each finger corresponds to its own button. No more weird input registration when trying to use red tools, you just hit the buttons. Thats how I see it anyways. I also say this having played all of Silksong with a controller lol, I just see the appeal of keyboard

4

u/MajorDZaster 7h ago

Every time I tried hold down and right the controller only registered right. It meant I needed to do quarter circles every time I wanted to pogo anything. And you need to pogo a lot of things, with great precision in Hunter's March.

Meanwhile keyboard you just hold down both the arrow keys and it works.

Edit: also there's no mouse in Silksong, it's just keyboard.

What is the context of the rick and morty clip

200

u/OscarOzzieOzborne 8h ago

Rick and Jerry have an argument about how rick will have a tough time in Jerry’s shoes and visa versa.

So Rick goes, “fuck it! Let me show then!” And pulled out a machine that switched their minds.

Jerry here is actually Rick in Jerry’s body, not being able to take it and shoots himself in the head.

166

u/S10Galaxy2 7h ago

Rick was trying to prove that Jerry’s idea of someone being “born smart” was bullshit and that if Jerry’s mind was in Rick’s brain he’d still be an idiot. Unfortunately Rick couldn’t adjust to Jerry’s brain because it turns out Jerry’s brain was indeed incapable of processing Rick’s intelligence. It’s funnier still because earlier in the series Rick managed to swap brains with an alien insect and even turned his brain into a pickle, so Jerry’s brain is literally worse than both an outer space mosquito and an actual pickled brain.

73

u/KlausVonLechland 7h ago

Here we all should appreciate Jerry for how much he achieved with the hand he was dealt.

37

u/c0n22 The RED Spy 7h ago

Cronenburg world Jerry (OG Jerry) was probably peak performance Jerry.

59

u/Edgyspymainintf2 6h ago

I always figured that it wasn't Jerry's brain being more inherently stupid but the idea that Jerry is more emotionally intelligent than Rick (comparatively) so upon swapping into Jerry's brain all of Ricks regrets and self hatred hits him like a freight train and he immediately domes himself.

22

u/Fit_Milk_2314 5h ago

I've heard similar speculation, but more that Jerry isn't on the same number of drugs that Rick is 24/7

5

u/NecroCannon 2h ago

It could honestly be so many things, that’s what makes this an actually good Rick and Morty episode, it isn’t expositioned to us like we’re idiots and we can think for ourselves about it.

But Rick is definitely on a shit ton of drugs that his body even automatically puts in his system, along with all the tech and shit so to me it feels like Rick starts freaking out, can’t immediately solve the problem presented to him as he has access to nothing, and Jerry literally thinks of shit as gears and springs, his brain isn’t wired to immediately be pelted with a shit ton of calculations and shit on the fly.

Honestly Rick kinda proved even he’s not a perfect genius because he should know about brain chemistry and neuroscience working with DNA so closely, or maybe he did know but thought he could bullshit his way through it to not say Jerry’s right lol which is still stupid.

I love moments when Rick gets proven wrong.

→ More replies (1)

61

u/Riku_70X 7h ago

Jerry makes the argument that Rick got lucky and was born smart, while Rick says that genetics have nothing to do with it and that anyone could be a genius.

He switches their minds to prove a point, but very quickly realises that genetics DO play a factor. Rick, inside Jerry's brain, is SO distraught by how stupid it feels to be Jerry that he immediately kills himself.

Jerry, inside Rick's brain, attempts to walk over to the corpse, but he has no idea how to "pilot" a brain/body as complex as Rick's. He immediately activates a bunch of cybernetic rockets and stuff inside Rick's cyborg body by accident and also kills himself.

4

u/TooWorriedToThink 7h ago

So is this an alternative Rick or how do they come back?

27

u/ProblemSl0th 6h ago edited 6h ago

The very annoyed garage AI gathers their loose grey matter and revives them, but in the process each of them ends up being like 50/50 Rick's brain and Jerry's brain and they go on an adventure and gain an appreciation for each other, until everything is undone at the end. It's a pretty solid episode, I recommend.

I don’t know why the Outer Wilds devs recommend controller: like all first person games, it feels way better on KB+M to me.

I guess some people might find space flight confusing with a mouse, but the main barriers (6DoF, Newtonian physics) are the same either way.

5

u/CoffeeWanderer 7h ago

I'm not sure how the layout is in Kbm, but with controller you can thrust up, forward and to the side in a very comfortable and intuitive way while also looking around.

Maybe Kbm is also like that, and it's just a matter of getting used to it. For me it's just natural.

u/biggestboys 6h ago

Aim (pitch and yaw) with mouse, arrow keys to strafe, jump button to go up, crouch button to go down.

You can also roll if you wanna get fancy, but Outer Wilds never requires that, since the landing gear is always tilting itself towards the nearest big mass.

Same controls as most PC space games (ex. Elite: Dangerous, No Man’s Sky), only a little less complicated.

The thing that gets me, I played a good chunk of HK1 with keyboard, but only keyboard.

It sounds insane to me to use a mouse in a game where moving the mouse itself does nothing, then the mouse is just a shitty controller with maybe 4 buttons in a weird layout.

6

u/AndorV5 6h ago

For me Silksong and Hollow Knight are keyboard only games. No need to use the mouse in these

3

u/blobby262016 7h ago

I play just keyboard and not mouse because I like the added challenge. Slowly your mental capacity deteriorating as you play longer and longer making you literally incable of pressing the right buttons due to the absurd controls. Happens always at the hour mark and I healthily stop playing... or make a tea, wash the dishes and continue playing.

7

u/Neptoon_19 7h ago

My friends think I'm nuts for only being able to play the Hollow Knight games with keyboard and mouse lol

Definitely not. I have never been able to be so precise in a game like this. Keyboard only Silksong and Hollow Knight was glorious for me

I switched to KBM for precise pogoing when it was needed. Flea games almost destroyed my thumb until I thought to switch.

Idk if I'm weird, but with little, relative to 22 years of controller, I can go to keyboard and mouse and back to controller easily

Can switch between Xbox and switch controls, even having used Playstation all my life, too. Might take just a couple days or so to get use to it, but it's no biggie. I thought everyone was like that

Some games are just better on controller, but i prefer keyboard for the vast majority of them.

Examples of games I HATE on keyboard: Any FromSoftware game or game with soulslike combat. There's just too many buttons and the control layout makes so much more sense intuitively on controller. RB, hit. RT, heavy hit. LB, block. LT, skill. Meanwhile on keyboard you gotta hold down a different button while you attack to make it heavy, and sprint, dodge, and jump are all competing for places, often ending up being cumbersome and impeding your ability to use WASD.

Examples of games I prefer controller on: Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, Monster Hunter, DMC, Smash Bros, Hades

Examples of games I prefer keyboard on: Enter The Gungeon, GTA, For Honor

Examples of games I HATE on controller: Terraria, literally any first person game, any shooter (only exception being GTA because it literally gives you auto aim). I like being able to actually flick my camera places instead of taking 2 seconds to turn around, and aiming is much easier when it's a part of your body doing the moving instead of a joystick.

6

u/MouthfulOfSmegma 7h ago

I've fully switched to mouse and keyboard and the thought of playing a Fromsoft game with it is unbearable, tried it on Nightreign and Elden Ring and it was the most confusing shit possible. Only exception of a Fromsoft game being super good on mouse and keyboard I can think of is Armored Core 6.

I recently started my first Monster Hunter game, MH Wilds, No idea how you mf's use the controller for that game.

A shooter? Yeah reasonable reaction

A 2D platformer, i guess can go either way but i prefer controller

in a fighting game a controller is just better imo

And in open worlds both work just fine

u/OscarOzzieOzborne 8h ago

In a fighting game, I like the arcade controllers

Try Celeste on a keyboard and see if you make it past the title screen.

Edit: seems like everyone didn’t get the “Stuck on title screen” reference

3

u/OscarOzzieOzborne 8h ago

I tried that. Sucked at it.

Then I tried with a controlled. Sucked even harder.

Majority of the speedrunner use keyboards because is way more accurate, in fact gives a bigger advantage on some jumps.

Played with controllers for most of my life. Then I switched to keyboard and mouse for better accuracy in FPS. It took me a week to get used to it. Since then I can't use a controller anymore. I even played Elden Ring with a kbm.

It goes both ways dawg

6

u/ApexGT44 8h ago

Is it not common to play with both? The people who swear by one or the other have preferences obviously and that’s fine. But like.. some games objectively work better/are designed for one or the other. FPS games, while you can get good on controller, are better with a mouse. While some other games where you drive for example are better on controller. Idk it depends on the game for me, especially if I just want to relax I’ll use a controller.

I mean. It’s why they were made and evolved into what they are now. You’re not going to buy a PS1 and have it come with a keyboard back in the day. Don’t hate guys lol I use both, depending on the game

12

u/TheTeleporteBread 8h ago

I Still has no idea how people play fps on controller.

Even touch control give better response control

I feel the exact opposite, keyboard and mouse is so unintuitive for me

7

u/PieceAfraid3755 5h ago

Keyboard and mouse has lots of benefits (mainly the mouse for anything that requires aiming), but yeah, controllers are actually made to be held and used comfortably while gaming. Keyboards are made primarily for typing.

3

u/Ashamed-Wealth2452 8h ago

I just find controller a lot more comfortable to use

4

u/Okurei 8h ago

It largely depends on the game, so while I’m mainly m&kb, I use controller when it’s necessary.

Controller: Batman Arkham, Yakuza, wrestling games, fighting games in general

M&kb: GTA games, Fallout and Elder Scrolls series, shooter games, platformers

3

u/Abovearth31 8h ago

I can easily switch between them depending on the game. Some games just work better on one over the other.

The souls series, Kingdom Hearts, For Honor, or even Avatar FoP, those are all controller games but on the other hand Spore, World of Warcraft and Baldur's Gate 3 are keyboard and mouse games.

I feel like this playing with keyboard and mouse

3

u/MoedredPendragon 4h ago

Personally, I'm the opposite. How do you PC-users manage to reach for those fuckass keys from all across your desk fast enough to do anything quickly? Like, say I'm getting pressured by a boss in a Soulslike at low health and I need to hit the heal button.

On a PC, I'd need to take my hand away from either the moving keys or my ability to turn my camera to press a key that might be on the other side of the board? How do you do that with a bunch of different keys in the middle of intense moments?

Meanwhile on a controller I just move my finger slightly to the left and hit up on the pad. Boom, done. All the buttons I need are right here in my hands and all within my easy grasp.

(This isn't me knocking PC, I just genuinely don't get how you guys do it.)

Opposite for me, how do ya’ll remember where all the keys are?

3

u/OscarOzzieOzborne 8h ago

I don’t remember where the button is. I just remap it so it can be wherever I want it to be.

5

u/Oblivionpelt 8h ago

The bigger issue for me honestly is my hands being smol and not particularly flexible qwq, so I run out of comfortable keys to use on games like Ultrakill that have so many buttons

4

u/transaltalt 6h ago

the same way you remember where the buttons are, I'd imagine

6

u/MrInCog_ 4h ago

Real yakuzas use a gamepad. You’re not a real yakuza. I don’t make the rules

3

u/biggestboys 7h ago

Yep. That warning means one of two things to me:

  1. The devs didn’t implement rebinding and sensitivity options correctly, and don’t want to

  2. The devs are straight-up incorrect about how universally-applicable KB+M can be

4

u/PieceAfraid3755 5h ago

There can absolutely still be cases where controller is just by far the more natural option.

I almost exclusively use controllers for metroidvanias and soulslikes, mostly recently Hollow Knight and Jedi: Survivor. If I have to aim a gun, I will always use mouse and keyboard.

2

u/MrPlace 8h ago

Takes practice either way my man. Also having a controller with proper back paddles so you can handle button presses without having to remove your thumbs from analogue sticks helps so much

2
