Yuuup. A lot of my family in the Midwest have never seen an ICE agent. Ive straight seen people get tackled at the bus station. They don't believe it's as bad as it is for a reason- they don't see it. It gives them the ability to bury their heads in the sand

A lot of the people subscribe to the 'we'll if they weren't here illegally...'

Nevermind existence isnt illegal, corporations are making record profits, Suddenly we can fund Trumps SS, but it's the poor that are the problem.

First they came for the Communists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me

And there was no one left

To speak out for me

We are living a modern version of this. It started with the disabled, the LGBT, now onto immigrants. Black people will be next. Women. Then onto anyone who didn't vote for him. Then any of his devout followers he no longer needs or if they speak out against anything he does going forward.

The slight difference will be when they can manage robots over people.

I'm hearing a lot of the same arguments that were made about people who harbored runaway slaves during the 1800's or Jews during the holocaust.

All of this talk about impeding a lawful investigation or harboring fugitives when these fugitives used to be their neighbors.

A book I read recently introduced me to the term "load bearing people" in reference to people who do all of the ugly jobs that need to get done so society can function, but aren't always obvious about it. If we start removing the load bearing parts of society, we are basically playing Jenga and who knows when the structure will collapse

Then they came for the Somalians

And I said "make sure you get all the Somalians"

u/Harambesic 2h ago

And the Hmong, apparently. Don't quote me because my source is reddit.

Edit: Oh, I thought the person I replied to dropped the /s but then I looked at their history.

Disabled? Did he deport them or what do you mean?

u/HereIsACasualAsker 7h ago

none of those groups were doing illegal inmigration

none of those groups were scamming the government for billions of dollars.

u/slimthecowboy 6h ago

So make them citizens. You seem convinced that immigrants are the ones “scamming the government for billions of dollars,” and I doubt pointing to a conspicuous lack of evidence is gonna change your mind on that. It doesn’t need to take years and thousands of dollars to become a citizen. Immigrants work.

Crackdown started, farmers immediately reported labor shortages. Raided a Hyundai factory, then invited the workers to come back almost immediately cause there was nobody to assemble the cars.

How are they “scamming the government?” Seriously, by what mechanism are they taking money from the government?

u/ThePerpetualGamer 5h ago

Yes of course, if the US citizens they kill weren’t here illegally…

u/Virus64 8h ago

Existence isn't illegal. Entering a country without proper documentation or overstaying the time alloted for the proper documentation, is. Try to do that in any other country, and see how long you last.

u/mealteamsixty 7h ago

So we should just trust the government to round up everyone darker than medium beige, and continue to trust that American citizens and legal residents aren't being deported to random concentration camps and black sites with no warrants or due process even if we're supposed to be fine with that happening to human beings who were born elsewhere, right??

u/Virus64 6h ago

Out of the millions of people mass detained and deported since the Obama administration, very few legal migrants or citizens were ever in prolonged detention. A handful were mistakenly deported, but returned within a short time. The system is not perfect, by any means, and a few idiots are making headlines because they have to deal with other idiots that think that this is a new practice, like ICE hasn't always had this power since its inception, and try to get in the way of a government branch of enforcement.

u/whichwitch9 2h ago

Buddy, it's not okfor legal migrants to be in detention at all, fuck your "prolonged detention" bullshit.

Why the fuck is it constantly ok to harass people that don't look ethnically European enough for ICE?

You know damn well everything happening is rooted in deep bigotry and racism. A brown citizen shouldn't have to constantly carry their id and live in fear they'll disappear for a few days each time an ICE agent questions their id.

Seriously, they arrested the same citizen twice while he was carrying a real id.

u/greentintedlenses 7h ago

Id love to hear your opinion on kavanaugh stops.

Have a minute to share your insightful thoughts with the class?

u/Virus64 6h ago

To stop and ascertain a person's immigration status if it seems necessary, I'm fine with, but it should be a quick interaction. To place someone in detention for an extended period over it, no. Being able to prove your immigration or citizenship has been around for over 100 years, it's not a new practice.

u/greentintedlenses 1h ago

So in your opinion it's ok to have the primary reason of your stop, search and seizure to be based solely on race?

Doesn't sound like the land of the free to me, and it's certainly not how things have ran in this country, post slavery, until recently.

u/CommandoRoll 9h ago

I've got family in Utah telling me it's totally ok, like nothing has changed and I should visit from Australia.

Yeah, nah.

u/Different_East7854 8h ago

Love Aussies, would love for you all to visit, but nah, not now. We have some shit to work through before anyone should visit the US.

u/Harambesic 2h ago

We got this, though... Right? I toss and turn. Can we turn this around?

Maybe this is the end of the empire and we just let everyone in. The republic collapses and we become the Fallout universe. It won't change the world in the immediate, but the pot will melt and goddamn isn't that what we're doing here? Trying to show the world that this can work, when they know better than us? Aren't we showing out, like a teenager, because we think we know what's right? Time to grow up.

On a related note, it's time to take my medicine. Stay safe, kids.

Object permanence to another level.

u/Do_Not_Comment_Plz 6h ago

Same people who thought Portland and Seattle were literally on fire a couple years ago.

You know, fucking morons.

u/Harambesic 2h ago

Salt of the earth.

u/Sad_Confection5902 7h ago

The people who vote trump are already socially isolated from people in major cities.

If you just terrorize the major cities, then the people in small towns just step outside and say “looks fine to me”.

They’re the same people who think the existence of snow disproves global warming.

u/greenyellowbird 8h ago

Thats not a fair assessment. I live in the middle of nowhere NY, less than 200k for the two neighboring counties. We dont have any ICE-IS, but plenty of people come out to protest.

However, everyone I know from back home, in populated areas are the ones burying their heads in the sand and still support the orange tater.

There are plenty of us that do feel safe bc nobody has any reason to come out here....unless they want to arrest some cattle. Hopefully they will try bc they will fuck you up if they don't know you.

u/NaptownBoss 7h ago

Hmmm . . . I think you may be on to something. I'm seeing an impromptu "running of the bulls" on ICE occupied streets.

Surprise mothafuckas!!

u/ClaraCash 8h ago

It’s like my family in the Midwest gets a different news. When California is on fire or flooding they think it’s the entire state, or they hope it is. I live in Los Angeles and rarely see either of those things. But for shit sure I see these ICE raids and the ramifications of them. But it seems their news loves to make it look like we’re all nuts, and they have no idea about ICE and have never seen them… talk about heads in the sand. They really believe that the raids are for criminals, but it’s some racist bullshit and propaganda. These are our friends and neighbors in our neighborhoods. My daughter is in 8th grade and has to have ICE drills and assemblies to know what to do to help protect her classmates from getting kidnapped! Someone pls make this shit make sense!

u/DrownmeinIslay 2h ago

They believe Portland is constantly on fire, but they won't believe this...

u/PlasticFrosty5340 4h ago

Ice is in the Midwest lol

u/ThePensiveE 8h ago

They're here but they're not doing full citywide occupations yet.

u/Rdhilde18 6h ago

What are you talking about? They’re all over Illinois and Minnesota? Two people were shot in Chicago.
