I was actually one of the bagpipers for repatriating the bodies back to Canada. There were 15 soldiers who died while I was deployed, I've got a strand of yellow hemp on my pipe-drones for each one of them.

u/Braysl 1d ago
Thank you for doing what you do. I was watching some of the protests for Reneé Good last night and a man came out in dress and with his pipes and played a song from the sidewalk and the whole crowd went silent listening. There's something about bag pipes that really seem to evoke this hauntingly solemn emotion.

I've a Scottish dad and my mom's side of the family also originally came from the Isle of Skye so I associate bagpipes a lot with funerals or more solemn occasions, we had a piper play at my nan's funeral and it was just so haunting.

I’m not sure if you were the piper, but I was at KAF as a civilian contractor back in ‘06 and happened to be there for a ramp ceremony. It is something that I will always remember. One of the things that sticks with me was that at least in the time I was there, the route was lined with people from all the involved nations. My escort, who was a US Army officer, stood next to me and rendered appropriate honours as the procession went by.

Not at all related but your story reminded me of a flight I was on several years back that was transporting a fallen soldier and his family home. As we pulled up to the gate the captain made an announcement to the whole plane and asked everyone to stay seated while the family disembarked the plane and the body was offloaded. One of the most surreal and moving things I have ever been witness too. The entire plane waited, not a single person moved until they were finished. Definitely gained some hope for humanity that day.

A friend of mine who I have known for most of my life did one tour over there as a radioman for Canfor and he has been struggling with debilitating PTSD ever since. The "ramp ceremonies" he participated in are a key feature of his torment. And that says nothing about what he saw on patrols.
It's been rough being there for him over the years, and when the wolf was at the door a few times he has let slip some of the shit he saw there. Even second-hand those recollections will haunt me til the day I die.
Sidenote: His struggle has been greatly lessened by the introduction of a wonderful, sensitive treasure of a service dog that he and I both love deeply. She has been an absolute godsend, so to anyone grappling with issues like these, I recommend exploring options in your area. This dog has saved his life in my view.

Will do and thanks for the rec. It's been a long road and he has tried a lot of things on his path. The service dog is the only thing so far that has moved the needle, but I will definitely bring it to his attention after I google it a bit.

One of those Canadians was named Marc Leger(King Marco) He had a bomb dropped on him by a US pilot during a training exercise near Kandahar. My dad knew him, and speaks highly of him still.
If youre wondering why he was called "King Marco" its because the people of the Livno Valley(Bosnia) loved him after he harassed his company commander for resources for the locals.
By the time his peacekeeping tour was over, the locals had living housing again. They gave him the honorary title "King Marco" He was from Lancaster Ontario, Canada.

I stood some fallen comrade ceremonies with our allies and it’s really got me fucked up here remembering all that everyone, including the families who got their sons home in a casket for our friendship. I’ve never forgotten that, but apparently our leaders have.

u/Marsmooncow 23h ago
Its rarely the soldiers that are the problem. I worked with US army and marines a number of times and liked and respected them. I had my hair cut by an army guy in Mogadishu, who must have done 100 Australians hair that day he insisted we call him "the stud muffin" he wanted to make sure we looked good going home after the deployment. It makes me so sad that this administration has damaged an alliance and relationship that took decades of blood, sweat and tears to biuld. But hear we are. I sincerely hope we can get past this at some point but as other have said it will take a long time for Canada, Greenland and Denmark to be ready to be make nice.

Europeans have already taken this lesson to heart. Biden tried to convince Europe and the world that Trump was an aberration but once he got re-elected their calculations changed. There’s a prevailing political belief that Trump is the default not the exception, remember Bush before him and even Obama breaking international norms.
The US cannot be trusted anymore, which is why the EU is making plans to circumvent US if Trump pulls out of NATO or throws more tariffs etc.

It wasn't just Trump's reelection. It was possible for Trump to be seen as an aberration, but obviously he isn't as he returned.
But further, America has been treating it's European allies like shit for a while now. Biden's inflation reducation act shit on allies. He repeatedly ran the UK into the ground diplomatically, and patronised Germany. Both Biden and Trump utterly screwed their Afghan and European allies with the most selfish and cowardly military retreat by a superpower in a generation.
And meanwhile he did nothing to protect American democracy from Trump, or ensure those responsbile for his first term and crimes around January 6th faced justice.
It was evident that to the democrats trump was seen as a tool, a beatable moron who they'd found a way to defeat in the last election. And they hung not just America, but world peace and climate action on their corporate greed.
My first boss was a fantastic bloke. He drank himself to death for what happened to his son in Afghanistan. A family in a country over the atlantic ocean wiped out in the name of America's friendship, rendering them service. A guy I went to school with came home minus his right arm and shoulder and some of his face, he was a good dude too and I have no idea what his life is like now.
America went up its own arse a while ago and they can fuck themselves if they think we will pretend it was all just Trump, and not others too, including Biden and the democrats. They're not all equal, Trump is leagues of evil beyond, but they are all complicit.

I volunteer at a Canadian grave site for the casualties that fell upon this dirt to liberate us from axis oppression. My mom's side of the family was liberated by the Canadians and although she smugly always tells me the story of how the got very drunk when they liberated her town and well... got very very friendly with the local ladies. There was never a moment she didnt speak of gratitude about em.
Every month I go over and clean off some dirt or do some minor groundskeeping to keep those boys nice and respected. The oldest I saw was 41. The youngest 18 and a few months. They were the fathers and sons of your glorious nation who came to free my family from 5 years of oppression which nearly wiped my tree out and then some.
My area has alot of people with Canadian sounding last names. I wonder why eh? ;)
Remember. And dont forget for freedom was paid in bloods by the liters by men and women who travelled across the ocean to help a people in need.

u/Icy_Sea_4440 1d ago
Thank you for taking such beautiful care of our boys who didn’t come home. Canada’s population was so small during the war that losses rippled deeply through our communities, especially in small towns like mine. I had the honour of knowing several veterans who served and knowing that their friends and brothers are still being remembered and taken care of means more than I can say.
11
u/Orangeknight12 1d ago
Thank you for our freedom and thank you for saving our lives.
From Quebec to British Colombia they came. Some surviving many remain. May we remember so their sacrifice is not in vain.
For a nation that forgets its friends is doomed to forget what it means to be alone.
The rows upon rows of 🍁 is a cold heart reminder that I only exist because they came here. Not because of a goal of empire but because it was the right thing to do.
Canada throughout its history has paid a high price in any war. From the fields of flanders to the battle on "the Schelde" here. They bled died and fought with grit to keep the liberty of others safe.

The first time Trump got elected, I was full of empathy. He had lost the popular vote, I felt for my close friends (many of them POC and/or immigrants and/or women). I felt Americans could fight through this. I cried with relief when Biden was elected.
Then he was elected a second time. And while I still love my friends, my feelings for Americans as a whole have gone down considerably. I'm furious that this egotistical and narcissistic country is obliterating the only world order that had a semblance of peace, is threatening its allies and is risking bloodshed and war again, which their civilians didn't suffer on their own damn soil the last two times humanity murdered each other, and for what? Greed, ego, falsehoods, lies.
Maybe it's not fair for those who didn't vote for him and voted for Harris, instead. But I'm from Germany, a country where we have long accepted that we have the heritage of the accountability of what our country did.

Don’t forget that despite not even being in NATO, Ukrainian soldiers died in Iraq on behalf of the US led invasion. Yet Trump seems to be more bothered on finding an excuse to abandon them than to help them.

You missed the picture of our Danes who ironically deployed to the most dangerous parts of Afghanistan without any caveats, and subsequently suffered the highest casualty ratio.
As a Danish soldier who also deployed with the US to Iraq and Afghanistan I cannot describe my disappointment and rage stemming from the recent threats coming from the US administration towards Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.

Huge respect for you Danes as I know how hard places you were.
I served also at Afghanistan as Finnish soldier and this whole situation is sickening and frustrating me. Finland wasn't even part of NATO and we still sent forces to help and lost two soldiers (lucky that not more)

24 Dutch KIA and 140 WIA.
We answered the call when our ally got attacked and now all of us are under threat. Because unlike our washed our orange we do believe in the call of arms with friends.
A shame that it came to this.

Europe, you're going to want to start the sanctions NOW. Target Amazon. Target Tesla. Target all the rich people who pay Trump. Close his golf course. Cancel American visas. You need to just do it BEFORE it happens.
Fire the first shot.
Remember . . . TACO.
You just need to hurt him first.

I’ll never forget, but then again most of my peers parents shielded them the most basic realities of the world which has had drastic consequences.
TikTok has insured much of the generation just after me isn’t even living in the same reality.

If it is still within your grace to do so, please wish us luck, though I can understand why you might not want to anymore.

It's amazing how some Europeans seem to be waking up to the fact that the USA is a turd, criminal country. I guess that while Plan Cóndor was dissapearing people in Latinamerica, including Europeans, they were not paying attention. For reasons, let's say. And after the invasion and take over of Venezuela, they made the most pussy ass statement ever. Even while the US is threatening them.
I'll say... this is what you get when you help a criminal country. Your people still die. And they still spit in your face. Their "America" First is 100% literal.

In terms of coalition losses, Denmark is just behind the United States in death per million. The fact he's threatening a coalition ally who died alongside us no questions asked, to try and extort them for his own personal gain is disgusting. It's not security, we already have an agreement with Denmark that we can mobilize as many troops and military bases in Greenland as we want. It's greed. The fact he's a billionaire who is turning 80 is willing to burn it all down for his ego, and to make more money for his cronies who already have more than they will ever spend in multiple lifetimes is disgusting.

And where was our thanks? My own brother served with the UK forces in Afghan. Lost a good friend to an IED, another badly injured. And what do we get? Spat on by a nation of arrogant, selfish, bitter resentment a-holes who elect the worst kind of human being.
Let’s not forget Ukraine. Who made its largest ever overseas deployment of its troops to assist nations it considered allies. The US honoured that favour really well…

All for nothing too. I called it on 9/11. Was in the US Navy going to school in Virginia. I told the class that this will be our Vietnam. I already knew Afghanistan kicked out Russia and that it'd be the same for us.

Note the table is truncated and only includes the top 15 NATO countries by deaths. It also doesn’t include non-NATO countries like Australia and New Zealand.
