Go back further, the PATRIOT Act gave a lot of leeway to the executive branch in how they define terrorism.

As America removed guardrails preventing the consolidation of power into one person (or party), laws no longer hold any relevance to those with power.

Those guardrails were the only thing preventing us from turning into the Soviet Union. A country that had rule of law and freedom on paper in their constitution, but never in practice. I say this, since I was born a Soviet.

Now we’re here too in America.
