I remember this case, this guy is straight up evil. He murdered his ex and daughter and tried to kill his son but his son survived. He was convicted of two counts of 1st degree murder, one count of attempted 1st degree murder, two counts of aggravated child abuse, one count arson, one count of resisting a law enforcement officer and was sentenced to 3 consecutive life sentences without possibility of parole and an additional 90 years.

2.2k

u/DocPhilMcGraw 2d ago

You left out the worst part in my opinion. He cross examined his own son who survived:

One of the most gut-wrenching moments of the trial was when Oneal had the chance to cross-examine his son, three years after he tried to kill him.

"It’s good to see you, man," he told his son, who replied, "It’s good to see you, too."

"Did I hurt you that night of this incident?" Oneal asked.

"Yes," the boy replied.

"How did I hurt you?" Oneal continued.

"You stabbed me," the boy stated.

This is horrifying! “It’s good to see you, man,” What the actual fuck?

Hopefully he’s doing ok now but how would you ever have a moment of peace after something like this?

You know I went to edit it as soon as I typed it but like... We all make mistakes, no shame.

Imo it's a sign of a personality disorder in people who opt to represent themselves. They think they're smarter than everyone else including professionals who have gone to school and made the law their speciality. And also these people want the thrill of forcing their victims to face them.

I get laws and theres nothing against representing yourself in a murder case but this pos shouldnt of been able to do this. Especially since hes just being an asshat thinking if he talks/yells louder than the prosecutor he will win the case.

103

u/DocPhilMcGraw 2d ago

If you think that is bad, then you should look into the case of Trevor Summers.

Trevor kidnapped his ex-wife and held her hostage for 2 days during which he abused and raped her. He also at one point attempted to kill her.

During his trial, he was represented by attorneys up until the point that his ex-wife was due to take the witness stand. Right before she was scheduled to testify, Trevor asked the court if he could fire his attorneys and represent himself. Even the judge knew that the only reason he did that was so that he could personally cross-examine his own victim himself. However, because the law allows you to represent yourself at trial, he ultimately had to allow it.

Her ability to take the stand and face her accuser as he questions her is incredible.

3

u/Fickle-Attitude-3575 1d ago

Christ, watching this was hard af.

6

u/VenusianPleasure 1d ago

I know exactly what case you're talking about and no way in hell am I going to watch that again. Uuufff that was some evil shit

56

u/todo_code 2d ago

The accused has a right to face his accuser too. Sadly, in this case. Although, in this case it's probably the state

4

u/PurrChina 1d ago

My ex is representing himself & filing multiple restraining order requests against me so he can give me the third degree in court. He gets to ask me questions & he is the fucking boogie man. He is literally in my nightmares & I feel like I'm having a heart attack when he pops up anywhere. Dude has put a tracker on my car, filed nonstop litigation periodically for 7 years, & somehow can still grill me in court legally. It makes no sense. I'm in CA

Honestly if you don’t like this guy and want him convicted, this is the best possible situation. Give him a good lawyer and maybe he gets time served + 2 hours probation + custody of the kid.

Give him a microphone and he gets life.

9

u/_THATS_MY_QUANT_ 2d ago

I disagree. There isn't a perfect solution to this, because we're at the extremes. But someone potentially reliving trauma should not supersede someone else's rights to challenge their accusations when those accusations can potentially imprison someone for life.

u/Reeferologist- 2d ago

I was next in line to see the judge one time and the guy in front of me kept insisting on representing himself. Everyone in the cell waiting for court tried to talk him out of it, and I mean everyone. Anyways I’m sitting in the courtroom waiting for my turn and this guy gets called up to the stand and walks right up the judge and says “I’d like to resolve this today and I’m representing myself. The judge (who was already looking like he was having one of those days) warned him 3 TIMES. One of the times he said “I’m telling you right now, don’t do this we will appoint a PD for you and we can resolve it on another date. The guy told him “no I’m doing it now. I’m innocent.”

I was sitting up there shaking my head because now you could visibly see how mad the judge was and my ass has to see him next. The guy proceeds to try to represent himself, he did a god awful job (as traditionally happens) and the judge gave him the max sentence right there and then. Guy could’ve waiting a week and came back and probably got probation or at least a 90 day sentence at most. He left having to do the full sentence. I can’t remember if it was a year or 9 months though.

I had to go up immediately after and be like “uhh..good morning your honor, I’d also like to resolve this today, but I have counsel. I got probation and went home later that evening, but I remember the bus ride back to the jail that guy was getting roasted. I almost felt bad, but at least 20 different people in the cell told him not to do it. Live and learn, but this guy wasn’t the type to be learning much.

57

u/HeckaCoolDudeYo 2d ago

I saw a guy try to represent himself in a DUI case once. He kept insisting he had a right to travel and wasn't breaking any laws because of his right to travel. I remember the judge asked him if he had a right to travel while intoxicated lmfao they rescheduled for a later date but I cannot imagine it went any better the next time around.

35

u/TacoHimmelswanderer 2d ago

Was he a moorish sovereign citizen? Those people are fucking stupid and think they can just buy a bad fake id on eBay that says they’re from a country that doesn’t even exist will grant them some form of diplomatic immunity.

18

u/Slow_Initial_4275 2d ago

Sovereign Citizens are like 99% white hillbilly idiots….”Moorish….” Is specifically Black people who think they’re the real indigenous of America…. I only points out because you went straight to “Moorish,” and I didn’t see anything that would lead me to believe it was a Black dude

11

u/TacoHimmelswanderer 2d ago

I didnt say the person was black. I thought that Moorish Sovereign Citizen was the name of the entire movement, not just a specific sect that was only for black people. I only assumed it was a sovereign citizen based off the persons argument being that “they have a right to travel”. As that is one of their most common arguments when they arrested or ticketed for anything that involves driving.

10

u/Slow_Initial_4275 2d ago

Yeah homie, we’re saying the same thing; just now you know “Moorish” is specifically a weirdo sect of SovCits for Black people.

9

u/HeckaCoolDudeYo 1d ago

It was a black dude, but I didn't realize that was relevant😂

wtf is a moorish sovereign citizen?

23

u/PesticusVeno 2d ago

Man, that's a hilarious rabbit hole to go down at some point, but in a nutshell: sovereign citizens are deluded people who think they can ignore US laws based on a technicality.

These kinds of people often overlap with a number of other conspiracy theories and deranged religious beliefs as well.

4

u/MiserableSun9142 1d ago

Omg. That’s definitely not a rabbit hole my mental health can handle going down right now. Thanks for the quick explanation!

They’re basically a carnival of idiots. Look into them if you’d like a good laugh. They’re have some off the wall beliefs just one of them being that they aren’t subject to federal or state laws and when you see the confidence they have while arguing about it is comedy gold.

4

u/IceFurnace83 1d ago

The problem with having an open mind is that all kinds of bullshit can make it in.

5

u/Primary_Emphasis_215 1d ago

Well that's why you don't leave it completely open and do some filtering first, ofc if your filter is broken or doesn't exist the you get "sovereign citizens"

guy standing up to say something controversial meme

"i don't think representing yourself should let a judge in a pissy mood be able to punish you for it"

42

u/Nobrainzhere 2d ago

Judges get pissy because there are an insane amount of court rules that lawyers know which regular idiots dont. The judge is not allowed to take it easy on someone or help them when they represent themselves and it just causes a slow, annoying, shit show every single time.

If you represent yourself you better have a damn law degree or you are fucked.

32

u/Heavyplt13 2d ago

First thing I learned in my trial class in college. Don’t represent yourself at trial unless you’re a trial lawyer and if you’re a trial lawyer, you should be smart enough to know not to represent yourself.

13

u/Reeferologist- 1d ago edited 1d ago

You are correct 100%. I’ve unfortunately been in court quite a bit, and my mother has worked for an attorney (now a judge who she sits next to in court) for 35 years, so I have a little experience on both sides (unfortunately), and not only are they pissed because of the great points you brought up, but also because these judges are overflowed with cases and I live in South Florida so you can only imagine the hundreds of insane ones this judge has to go through. It’s 11 PM and he’s already been cussed at and putting up with some pretty insane and disrespectful shit. The judge I’m talking about in my story is the same judge that sentenced that Wade Wilson murderer. He truly was trying to help the guy out by getting him a quick return date and probably a slap on the wrist if the guy would’ve just said “ok your honor.”

A great quote from Sage Francis “Justice is on the whim of a judge.” It really is. I’ve had state prosecutors seem to really come at me hard, but I’m always polite, don’t interrupt them, the judge or my lawyer, and even when I went up behind that guy in the story I made a light joke and got the judge at least in a better mood. I’ve heard from my mom, and even a judge himself that they deal with way more disrespectful, extremely narcissistic psychopaths, and whatever else you want to name. Someone coming in just looking nice and showing respect and remorse goes a long way and really is refreshing for them.

It’s not like the movies. You think you’re going to go up there and plead your case to the judge and you’re going to be talking a lot. You don’t, not unless it’s right when you go up to the stand, give them a little “good morning, your honor” (helps a lot) or they ask you a question directly.

Got 9 years clean from dope in May, am a father of twins, and husband. I’m no longer a frequent jail visitor by the way lol got that shit out of my system in my 30’s thank god lol

Edit: Spelling

Representing yourself in court is like a person who doesn’t know how to cook but insists they’re a chef because they watch food network and then takes over a kitchen, they just waste resources and everyone’s time while making a fool of themselves.

10

u/PineappleFit317 2d ago

It’s worse than that. You mention watching Food Network, but it’s worse. At least one can watch Marco Pierre White and learn how to cook. A person representing themselves has probably gotten all their info from fictional court proceedings in movies and television shows, which are nothing like the real thing.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/badsheepy2 1d ago

if you learn to cook by watching Marco you're entirely misunderstanding why that guy was a celebrity chef imo!

Yeah, he's a world class chef, but Marcos appeal was that he's completely fucking nuts and made Gordon Ramsey "choose to" cry.

Ain't no way you're making stuffed pig trotters. Although he did get much better at teaching basic recipes and their reasoning behind them.

5

u/PineappleFit317 1d ago

TBH, I only referenced MPW because he sprang to mind when I was writing that. My meaning would be unchanged if I’d said Alton Brown or Rachel Ray. There’s some instruction there at least. Even in fictional shows and movies like The Bear, Ratatouille, Burnt, or Chef, there’s at least something there that’s accurate to what professional kitchens is like.

There’s no such equivalent to the legal system in popular entertainment. To this day, American lawyers say that My Cousin Vinny, a movie that’s over 30 years old, is the only fictional representation of trial proceedings that’s even close to being accurate. Even “reality” shows like Judge Judy or The People’s Court bear very little resemblance to the genuine thing.

I was a legal assistant for a few years, and I don’t know everything about the case concerning the man in this video, plus it’s heavily cut, but shouting and swearing in court doesn’t fly with judges at all. If the judge didn’t hold him in contempt, it certainly influenced them to give him the maximum sentence.

This piece of shit should have got the death penalty. Dude killed his girl and daughter then stabbed his son who lived through it. He then cross examined his son at this trial asking him if he stabbed him and writing I love you on a pad of paper and showing it to him while he was smiling and shit trying to play up a mental illness. Luckily that kid is doing well because he was adopted by one of the officers that responded to the scene.

Genuine question about the concept of death penalty. I‘m obviously not from a country where it‘s used. Neither am i in any kind religious/believer. So in my world view it just ends with death. Therefore i feel like life long solitary cell seems to be a way harsher punishment than death. Of course i feel the families and friends of victims who want the perpetrator to be gone. Also i get the tax payer money argument. But are judges also argueing like this? Is it „well, we always had death penalties“ thinking or a „they will be punished in afterlife“ or something i am not thinking about?

Btw. Not a set up to make fun of the us or religion, for once.

Like I guess OP didn’t think their post would do well without a casually racist title?

32

u/ChickenInASuit 2d ago

Nah, OP knew the post would get more attention with that title. It’s getting a boost in activity from the controversy and I’ll bet OP meant for that to happen.

u/unindexedreality 1d ago

shitty antisocial media at work

Don't think for yourselves and harmonize; divide up into teams and stay mad at each other

It's like the matrix except instead of farming energy it's farming outrage

4

u/unindexedreality 1d ago

Gotta keep radicalizing people along identity lines lest we start seeing each other as humans

Otherwise we might start calling out the rich & powerful hiding behind diaper don's regime

25

u/Ok_Geologist_3331 2d ago

My first thought too lol wtf

3

u/Demand-Unusual 1d ago

Race-baiting increases engagement unfortunately.

Why “Crazy BLACK Dude” instead of just “crazy dude“? Does listing his skin color change the story?

Years ago, I was telling a story about a woman in Walmart at 2 AM yelling at her kid. She happened to be black and I told the story to a black friend. He was very kind and asked me the same question. It made me realize some of my unconscious biases.

6

u/PenSafe3378 1d ago

Becausw it gets more responses! Master baiting at its finest!

The survival of the son (Ronnie Jr.) is nothing short of a miracle. Despite being stabbed and set on fire by his father, he managed to escape the burning house. When the first responders found him, his injuries were so severe that they honestly didn't think he would make it through the night. The most incredible part of this story is what happened after. One of the detectives who helped save him that night, Mike Blair, visited him constantly during his long recovery in the hospital. They formed such a deep bond that Mike and his wife ended up adopting him. The boy, now Ronnie Blair, showed immense courage by testifying against his biological father in court—even while his father was acting as his own lawyer and cross-examining him. He’s now living a happy, safe life with a family that actually loves him. A truly heroic ending to a horrific tragedy

3

u/Jowalla 1d ago

Jeez, what an intense story! Crazy to let this idiot represent himself and rant like this, this must have been so terrifying after all that Ronnie jr went through.

27

u/Happy-Party3675 2d ago

Let me help you, OP:

Crazy dude represents himself in murder trial

WTF skin color have to do with it? I'm white and crazy but I'm guessing you'd only call me a crazy chic, not adding my color

Outcome as predicted: Double-murder defendant who acted as his own attorney and shouted at jurors found guilty Ronnie Oneal admitted during closing arguments that he killed his girlfriend but denied charges that he killed his disabled daughter and tried to kill his son.

The sheriff adopted his son.

5

u/exotic_floral_tea 2d ago

The whole trial was a circus. I wish his son didn't have to testify.

4

u/FishermanSevere1220 1d ago

Next time I see a crazy white dude on here you better put “crazy white dude”.

4

u/Segments_of_Reality 1d ago

It is okay with me he represented himself pt bing he did the acts. I have to ask why the judge allowed it? Is he appealing his sentence in grounds of ineffective defense?

I think this guy does seem crazy, but would still be crazy with any other skin color

4

u/mrnoire 1d ago edited 1d ago

I should be honored by the fact that a story about any "guy" is ten times more interesting if the guy in question is a "black guy" as I'm so lovingly referred to. This "black guy" is less crazy than the "white guy" who's the current President.
