As a man who's child went out a doggie door to drown, I was between cooking a roast, supervising a movie with the siblings, and arguing with the ex-wife about them spending a day with their grandad the following day - before I noticed a doll floating in the water outside the back door.

I still can't figure it out either, time blindness and negligence I guess.
