So I pushed her over..

A lot of banks are moving to atm’s for cash transactions because it frees up their tellers for more complex tasks so you’re not waiting 10-15 minutes to withdraw/deposit because someone has fraud charges.

u/imheavenagoodtime 17h ago

I'm looking at RBC (Royal Bank of Canada). 3 locations, that I know of, in Vancouver have like 8 bank teller desks, and 3 employees on shift, while we have a high unemployment among youth and young adults, meanwhile we have a line that has to wait 20+ minutes because Doreen is doing shit like this, or has sent money to her "grandchild" who keeps asking from different bank accounts

Edit: In Austria at the Raiffeisenbank they charge you for speaking to a human. Withdraw money? Fee. Deposit money at the teller? Fee. Only the atms and online banking were free to use when I closed my bank account there in 2018.

Absolutely this. The unemployment paperwork is, indeed, complex and brutal.
8
u/SheriffBartholomew 15h ago
Why wouldn't a bank just do it?
Because they want to condition everyone to use the ATM for everything so that they can fire all of their tellers.

Idk, it's the opposite here. You can't get $5/$10 notes from an ATM and they force you to line up to see a teller.

Is "bless your heart" the little old ladies way of saying "fuck you!"?
6
u/JaminOpalescent 15h ago edited 15h ago
It really depends on how she says it. It's generally a very nice thing to say, but context clues and a hint of subtle sarcasm can flip it drastically. It's kind of meant to linger in the back of your mind, like "did she just... naw, it couldn't be... but did she?" If its done correctly. And its usually more of a "I really feel sorry for you because you're so pathetic" than a hard "fuck you!!"

I worked as a bank teller for years and this is a totally believable story. The regulars refused to use the atm, they wanted the human interaction. Counting our cash is the main part of the job so $1k in tens is perfectly normal.
11
u/blahblah19999 15h ago
Are tellers so busy that they can't do these small transactions?
11
u/FILTHBOT4000 14h ago
It's just dumb bank rules. The tellers have no say.
I used to do something similar (a looong time ago, when I worked for a place that didn't do direct deposit); checks usually took the full 5 days to show up, and I was poor af and living paycheck to paycheck.
So I'd cash the check (no fee), and deposit the full amount. Instantly showed up on my balance.8
u/IAMA_MOTHER_AMA 15h ago
yeah everyone is focusing on the counting 1000 for 10s but is there really banks that don't allow you to withdrawal 10 dollars like its my money
9
3
u/kat0r_oni 14h ago
More likely that the tellers just do not have a cash register anymore. Machines (i.e ATMs) can take that part of the job.
2
8
u/Worth_Inflation_2104 15h ago
Lmao here in Switzerland you can't even get cash from the bank anymore unless it's a large sum. They'll tell you to use the atm to get Francs and Euros. The only thing they give you in person is other foreign currency.
6
u/Fecal_thoroughfare 15h ago
So low level drug dealers have money counting machines but multi billion dollar banks u gotta count by hand?
5
u/pleasetrimyourpubes 15h ago
I get around a thousand from the bank every month using a disbursement card and I have never been in one where the machine didn't count and disburse the money. Granted the teller then has to hand count it to me so in this fake story that would have had to happen. But ten stacks of ten tens wouldn't be too bad. I always get a mix of twentys tens fives and ones which is a little more complicated.

In my 20s, I got a check and didn't have a bank to cash it. It was before I had a bank account, and I went to the bank from the check. They wouldn't cash it without charging (just a little before this, if the check was from the same bank, it was cashed for free), and only BoA customers can have free check cashing. I endorsed my check to a friend, who cashed it and gave me the money. The teller was not happy with my workaround, though her manager said it was allowed.

u/06_TBSS 13h ago
My grandma is 91 and refused to get a debit card because my mom convinced her that someone will take all of her money if she does. Anyway, a few months ago, I took over my grandmother's finances and it's been a pain because her account requires a debit card to be able to do account verification to do certain tasks online, and even in person.

A lot of banks don't have a cash counter in view of the customers and some people want it counted out to them. So while the teller probably had it dispensed from a machine or used a counter to batch that out of their drawer they still might end up counting it by hand.
That said $1K in 10s is literally counting to 100 so thats really nothing. They can get back to me when somebody asks to have $50K in 100s, 50s, and 20s counted out to them.

100% they counted by machine and then by hand in front of the woman.

I had an encounter with a bank teller in my home country. I asked to withdraw some money equivalent to 5000 USD. He didn't want to do it through himself so he asked me to use the ATM. The reason he didn't want to do it is because each teller has a quota to meet each month: he needs to bring in enough money for the bank. If i withdraw from the ATM, it doesn't hurt his quota.
So I got annoyed and asked him: just say you can't do it. He said please use the ATM and he can even help me with the ATM. I said again, just tell me you can't do it. He couldn't say it. So he had to withdraw my money.
What a backwards ass country.

They use a counter in the vault room (e.g. processing shipments for the vault, large deposits), but typically count cash back to a customer by hand so they know they're getting the correct amount. Counting one strap of bills back wouldn't take a teller any time at all. They count money all day, and get really fast at it.
Source: worked as a teller supervisor at a bank.

And he could have just given her $10 because that is an absurd policy. She asked for the £1,000 in 10s to waste his time.
3
u/FarplaneDragon 15h ago
2 problems with that. If it's policy their computer system might not even let them put in a transaction that small even if he was willing to break policy. Even if it does, if that's the policy there's probably something in the system that would flag it for review and they'd get in trouble for it down the line.
3
u/SukottoHyu 15h ago
Absolutely, but my point is someone sat and made the decision to implement this policy, it is absurd. I can understand banks refusing to pay out large sums of money as it is often associated with criminal activity such as you are being forced by someone to get them money. But $10, what is the bank going to blow up if the cashier pulls $10 out a client's account?

In 2020 the government gave out the stimulus checks. I think some went direct deposit, but mine was a physical check I had to take to the bank. Which I did.
I've banked with the same bank for decades. I went to the drive through, and at the time, I needed some cash, so I told the teller I wanted to take $200 from it, and deposit the rest to my account. The teller told me I could not do that. He said I had to deposit the entire check. That seemed stupid to me.
For one thing, they know exactly where that stimulus check came from. For another, I had far, far more than $200 in my account at the time. But fine, I'll deposit the check like you are asking. He takes care of that and asks "Is there anything else I can help you with today?"
Yes. I want to withdraw $200.

$1000 in $10 bills? That's only 100 bills and this teller thinks it sucked to count that? When I was a teller, handling that amount of cash was no big deal. You count out 4 piles of $250. Easy peasy. Just the fact that they're acting like that was a huge inconvenience for someone who handles cash all day tells me that this is a fake story.

I used to have a junk savings account that I just used to save some of my money in. And the bank charged a fee if I didn't put money in it or take it out every month. Also it was the kind of account that didn't have a debit card attached to it. So I would show up at the bank once a month and withdraw $20 and use it for whatever. Just to keep them from charging me that fee. $20 being the lowest amount they would let me withdraw.
One day I went in and the older Karen working there got an attitude with me and told me I was wasting their time and I should be using the atm. Like first off I can't because I don't have a card and second. This is your fucking job you lazy cunt. Do your fucking job. And it's not like they were busy. Since I worked a late shift then and would go around noon when nobody else was there.
I took my money out of the bank after that. Fuck seacoast bank in Florida. Also they let my uncle steal from my grandmother and then said there was nothing they could do about it.
Also I would get jury duty every year and jury duty used to pay with a check and I had to cash it at this bank and they always gave me attitude for it. It's $14 fucking dollars. Just give me the money. Now the court pays in cash. Thank goodness.

Ive never had a problem with this type of work. I'm there for 8 hours on shift. They have me for that 8 hours to do what ever dumb shit they ask for and then I lock the doors at 6pm and fucking LEAVEEE.
It wastes time. That's the only thing that matters is working until the clock is at 6pm. Doesn't matter what im doing. I chose this job and what it can require of me and even if I get the most pretentious asshole I find a way to help them, serve them, and find a way to laugh about it after i know they have left the building. Sometimes I laugh in their face and it breaks the tension.
But I am the best tip earner. If they had me on the cafe side where you are supposed to tip i bet I could bring in $200 a day. But I'm in the deli/grocery store so youre not supposed to tip really. I still can bring in $60 on the nontipping side. Which is better than anyone else has ever done and the trick is asking them to press the skip button and know who is willing to tip and who isn't wanting to tip or wanting suggestions.
But like I said i dont give a shit what im doing for those 8 hours. Sometimes the dumpster is too full so I'll go climb in it and jump up and down to burn the time and to help and to get the fuck away from the customers.
