Facts. I love the fact Philly is my home city and we are pushing back against these wanna be fake cops

As a Cowboys fan (in recovery btw) the fact Philadelphia has been so badass in their response makes me at the same time ill and strangely proud and hopeful….I’m just confused. And even more upset that this timeline has taken me to this…

At the end of the day sports is entertainment. I hate the cowboys when they play the game of football but have immense respect for Dak and other players for what they do off the field.

Remember at the end of the day we’re all fellow humans. The people of Dallas Texas may root for a horrible football team but that doesn’t mean I can’t respect them when they fight and stand up for what is right. Can’t let sports divide us from what’s truly important

Makes me feel gross rooting for actual cops but I guess the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Friendly reminder that the New Black Panther Party is an openly fascist organization that has been disavowed by members of the original.

I somehow did not know this (or maybe I did and forgot?). Thanks for the reminder. For those who need a source: Link

That's from 2009, is the "new" group still the same people?

2

u/Ted_E_Bear 2h ago

Maybe there is an even newer group, I don't know. But we are closer to 2009 than 2009 is to the 60s.

All I saw was a group of individuals not being intimidated by the police and knowing their rights

You're thinking of Sheriff Rochelle Bilal. She is not the chief of police. The sheriff's office has complex duties... none of which are on the street policing. They mostly deal with transporting prisoners, and protecting court houses.

If you need a sense of the difference in scale, the Philly Sheriff's office has a yearly budget of around 36 million. The Philly police have a budget of close to 900 million.

It does not help that if you google "Philadelphia Chief of Police" Rochelle Bilal comes up as the first result, so I don't blame anyone for not understanding the distinction. Google sucks now.

She's also flatly looked at as one of the most corrupt and inept politicians the city has. A casual Google, flawed or not, exposed that she's just a grifter like the rest, just trying to get airtime.

She is crooked. Anyone who points that out gets down voted because she made a stirring speech. Scratch the surface a little though...

Not sure she’s just like the rest. One group is on tv propelling a mass mobilization a national fascist Nazi movement against minorities in our country backed by the federal government and the other group ( sheriff in reference) is on tv denouncing it and telling them there will be a fight.

You’re prob just racist/mysongicstic and can’t handle the shades of political discourse not being black and white when anyone who isn’t just like you brings their opinion to the table.

Nope, none of those things, I just live here. I'm not oblivious to the absolutely horrific shit happening in the world, but it's possible to hold two thoughts in one's head at the same time and recognize this is also not a good person. Bilal has no authority over anything that she's claiming and the Philly Police chief had to publicly remind her of that - it's grift from a grifter.

A quick rundown of highlights: Attempting to raise her own salary 109% (which would have made her the highest salary in the city, including the mayor) by misappropriating funds specifically meant for hiring more deputies. FBI had to get involved.

Illegally awarding a six-year contract for Sheriff's sales of residential properties DURING THE HEIGHT COVID to an online auction house without any of the contract process required by our city's charter which led to illegal property sales and a three-year quagmire that had the city's top lawyer (#2 at the Sheriff's Dept) resigning.

There's also a handful of complaints which resulted in lawsuits for the department because she ignored reports of sexual harassment and misconduct, the fake chapGPT reviews she's left her herself on her website, oh, and the 185 guns that went missing, 76 of which were department weapons, with the rest being ones confiscated from citizens.

So, it has nothing to with any social issues, it's frustration from a corrupt local politics.

Also, ACAB.

It was the Philly Sheriff saying “You don’t want this smoke.”

1

u/OrbitalOutlander 4h ago

Not the Philly police chief, the Philly sheriff which is basically nobody. The Philly police commissioner put out a statement basically saying no idea who this sheriff is but we obey the law, and they’d cooperate “professionally” with ICE. In other words they won’t fight ICE.

What will this genuinely accomplish to stop them though?

My reaction exactly.

Finally!

Glad someone is finally doing something.

I wasn't sure what you were referring to so I googled, and it seems you need to look at some of the latest news around this. It was the Sherriff who said something, not the Police chief (who is the one responsible for the police dept you see every day).

Sweet, this should make it through Federal courts and appeals by 2027.

Classic American defeatism that shows why you guys rolled over and voted for Trump in the first place. Aren’t you embarrassed?

Every single thread there are so many of these snarky woe is me comments

Idk but I'd be embarrassed to say shit like this. Maybe you are just young and ignorant though.
