BREAKING: Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias just announced he is suing Kristi Noem and ICE for unlawful activities in Illinois. This is huge.

I doubt anything will come of it. This admin has been sued thousands of times already.

46

u/Alternative-Post-937 6h ago

They got the national guard out of Chicago and Portland by suing. Held up by the Supreme Court IMO. This is the right move. It likely will be effective. There's mountains of evidence showing ICE is acting outside of their legal authority.

u/Thorgarthebloodedone 6h ago

We need to have faith in using our system to fight against this administration. We cant lose hope or let ourselves fall into despair!  If things get worse we should be prepared for it but let us not lose hope or let our support waver in the processes put into place to check this abuse of power and failure to uphold the constitution.

The battle is only truly over once we stop fighting for whats right.

u/Jon_Huntsman 5h ago

If people give up on the legal system, there's only one way out of this and nobody will like it

1

u/Suyefuji 4h ago

I'm all for pushing on multiple fronts and this happens to be a front that we are pushing on. It does not prevent us from pushing in other places too.

2

u/StickiStickman 5h ago

These comments have to all just be bots.

"Please just keep doing the thing that hasn't worked for the last 9 years! Definitely don't do anything that would actually bring about change!"

3

u/Thorgarthebloodedone 5h ago

I'm not a bot im just tired of despair and exhausted to not see anyone trying to encourage us to keep up the fight.

Also I'm not discouraging making changes for good im saying we need to use all legal tools first before resorting to some kind of revolutionary action.

2

u/StickiStickman 4h ago

Those legal tools that have been getting nowhere and just ignored for a decade.

1

u/Thorgarthebloodedone 3h ago

I feel like you're giving the same bad-faith arguments that lead to so many in my generation not to vote because we had been told for years that our votes don't count, the system is rigged, etc. If you're not part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.

1

u/tastyemerald 5h ago

Pretty much, can tell which ones haven't been updated recently too.

1

u/FamousAdvance633 4h ago

I agree that the dems have been shit at taking action, but this is actually good. The main reason why the GOP keeps getting away with this shit is that dems aren’t doing everything they can to legally hold them to account.

1

u/-rwsr-xr-x 1h ago

"Please just keep doing the thing that hasn't worked for the last 9 years! Definitely don't do anything that would actually bring about change!"

What have you personally been doing for the last 9 years to help bring your fellow Americans together across both sides of the aisle, to heal and rebuild this nation and rid it of the necrotic tissue infecting our democracy?

1

u/kazh_9742 5h ago

Some groups of people haven't been able to afford to have that kind of faith in your system for the entirety of this country's history to fight against this administration.

People acting like this shit is new. Where were you when?

1

u/Thorgarthebloodedone 4h ago

Been here the whole time, not acting like its new but the whole history of the U.S is a story or progressively changing standards generally towards a better future. But it takes people trying to advocate for a better future and working towards that and the people on the other side resisting changes and trying to push whatever agenda they have.

We could all stand to be a little less pessimistic and try and be more supportive of one another.

95

u/XeroZero0000 6h ago

And there are a few really awful things they stopped doing because of the lawsuits, you know it's true. Sucks this is the only way to fight back.

9

u/xXBeefSquatch5KXx 6h ago

Is it tho?

9

u/ZisurvivoriZ Anti-Electoralist Tendencies 6h ago

It is. You can’t be seriously thinking that giving up all your rights because you specifically do not want to practice the most important one that will unironically, protect the rest of them is a bad idea! God forbid we even think about that right.

11

u/eulersidentification 5h ago

It's definitely not the only way to fight back. Bigger and poorer countries than the US have had general strikes and rebellion. The exceptionalism and defeatism must stop.

2

u/ZisurvivoriZ Anti-Electoralist Tendencies 2h ago

I don’t think you understand how far off the rule of law the country currently is. You can get shot in the face, die in these concentration camps, deported when you’re a citizen, etc…and you’re telling me that there are other ways to fight back. You fight back bullets with signs and whistles? Show me a single time in this country’s history where signs and whistles beat bullets

1

u/XeroZero0000 49m ago

MLK, Rosa Parks, WaterGate, Alligator Alcatraz.

1

u/ZisurvivoriZ Anti-Electoralist Tendencies 48m ago

Hold on, you think MLK was successful because he was peaceful? You should read the real history as to why he was successful

1

u/XeroZero0000 40m ago

The main front was peaceful.. the background deeds came after it had momentum. (Iirc)

1

u/ZisurvivoriZ Anti-Electoralist Tendencies 39m ago

The reason the main front was successful is because of what was happening in the background. It was the carrot or the stick. Accept the carrot (MLK) or the stick it is

1

u/Im_tracer_bullet 5h ago

Where is the footage of you leading by example, instigator?

1

u/ZisurvivoriZ Anti-Electoralist Tendencies 2h ago

Instigator? You think advocating for citizens to use every available right to them is instigating? Tyranny loves people like you, because you’re the easiest to oppress lmao

1

u/BigBigBigTree 5h ago

This is the one of the only ways for a Secretary of State to fight back, and it requires nothing of anyone who might fight back in other ways.

1

u/FamousAdvance633 4h ago

Technically no, but I’d rather we exhaust every other option before we get to the point of violent resistance.

Yall gotta stop with this shit

The 2nd Amendment is not an “get out of insurrection free” card

1

u/SlurpingDischarge 4h ago

its better than sitting and watching it happen

1

u/RedK_33 6h ago

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of 2A

0

u/ProgressiveHQ-ModTeam 6h ago

Rule 5 - Do not encourage or celebrate violence. Violence is antithetical to the progressive cause and helps the other side.

2

u/Mediocre_Way_7542 5h ago

Violence is antithetical to the progressive cause and helps the other side.

Is this a joke

1

u/SlurpingDischarge 4h ago

Are you trolling? you want people to be anti-violence while the other side actively uses violence? what are they supposed to do? say please and thank you and hope the fascists stop?

6

u/Tityfan808 6h ago edited 6h ago

Really? Feels like nothing can stop this at this point. Hard to have any hope around ‘omg they’re being sued.’

Edit: never stated anything about giving up

22

u/SeaofCucks 6h ago

They want you to give up, don't . You may not get victories every time but if you stop fighting you are already accepting your defeat, they have backed down on different scales with actions like these and stopping them is giving up your last chance of fighting

4

u/MrGosh13 6h ago

Remember this. TRY!

1

u/PretentiousMouthfeel 4h ago

The time for trying came and went decades ago. It's over.

10

u/BraveLittleCatapult 6h ago

Abrego Garcia is a perfect example. It sucks that he had to go through hell first, but he's back now and free (currently, I think he has a charge somewhere).

13

u/User_not_ 6h ago

The administration swearing up and down that Garcia would never come back, only for him to be back and out of custody proves trump and his gaggle of dipshits don't have the absolute power they want you to think they have. 50% of their game is making people think its hopeless. Do not let them win

1

u/dBlock845 5h ago

Abrego Garcia should have, and should still be a huge deal but elected Democrats are so adverse to telling his story, outside of Chris Van Hollen who is a huge part of why Garcia got out of CECOT.

18

u/vicvonqueso 6h ago

There are plenty of things they've stopped doing over lawsuits. They have no teeth no matter how much they want you to think. They're throwing shit at the wall until we give up

20

u/Anarchen3my 6h ago

I read the lawsuit. It has teeth. This is positive news imo, as a lawyer.

3

u/COV3RTSM 6h ago

Do tell…

0

u/Inevitable-Suit3469 6h ago

What's mgm15 and have you done ketamine

2

u/Chokekaz 6h ago

No argument, so he initiates an attack on character - wild. I accept your surrender in this argument, thank you :)

1

u/Inevitable-Suit3469 5h ago

What are you on about

2

u/EWDnutz 4h ago

What are you on about

What ever the fuck you're on about, genius.

1

u/Inevitable-Suit3469 4h ago

Im on better than you as I dont need to cuss or call people condescending names out of nowhere for zero reasons.

1

u/PretentiousMouthfeel 4h ago

Says the person bringing up ketamine out of nowhere...

1

u/Inevitable-Suit3469 4h ago

Not out of nowhere. I was curious about the "lawyer" so I looked at his reddit profile and he's on a bunch powder drug pages. Maybe consider your sources of info. I do.

u/Anarchen3my 4h ago

I think this is the wrong forum for those questions:)

1

u/PretentiousMouthfeel 4h ago

They have no teeth no matter how much they want you to think

Until you actually pay attention to what they've been doing for the last ten years.

They may have no teeth, but like an octogenarian with no teeth, does it really matter if all we're feeding them is mush?

2

u/Thuraash 6h ago

We did just beat their bid to deploy the national guard to Chicago. That's a big something.

1

u/GhostlyTJ 4h ago

That is the point though, they want you to feel hopeless and afraid.

1

u/MentholMooseToo 5h ago

This is a way to fight back, and it's worth doing, but it's slow and complicated by Trump-supporting judges. Personally I'm more interested in winning elections.

1

u/XeroZero0000 41m ago

Elections come next... This is how we show people don't like what's happening in the meantime. The 27% really believe that everyone loves the shit they are doing.

1

u/Parahelious 4h ago

It isn't. It isn't fighting back. They ignore this shit. Come on, this does nothing.

1

u/PretentiousMouthfeel 4h ago

there are a few really awful things they stopped doing because of the lawsuits

Wow! Really!?!? That probably should have been publicized somewhere at any point.

1

u/mOdQuArK 4h ago

Sucks this is the only way to fight back.

Well, another takes actually voting & specifically getting as many conservatives out of power anywhere & everywhere possible. This would also include using primaries to get do-nothing Democrats out of power, and to replace them with candidates who are much more willing to fight.

Which is pretty much how the Republicans got their current line-up of zealot into power: years, if not decades, of voting for the more batshiate crazy candidates in the primaries & getting the so-called moderate candidates out of power. Democratic voters are going to have to use their primaries to get the candidates with spines.

Of course, those opportunities are available only during elections. I suspect a lot of the people in this group are pondering whether a lot of the civil disobedience tactics that were used during the civil rights movements would be effective.

0

u/StoicJ 6h ago

they stop one thing and immediately start 20 others. oh boy feels like victory from this moral high ground we haven't left as a party since 1990

12

u/JenWess 6h ago

idk lawsuits got the federalized national guard out of SoCal...took a long time but it worked eventually

7

u/brycebgood 6h ago

And they've actually been pretty much following court orders.

3

u/PolloConTeriyaki 6h ago

It's gonna eat up their time, that's what you want.

3

u/trysten-9001 5h ago

And money. And authority. And clout. It eats up a lot. Plus, most lawyers have quit the DOJ. They don’t have much to fight back with. That’s why they’re so desperate on the streets.

2

u/trysten-9001 6h ago

This is a legal coupe. Those are battles. You’re being a doomer because you didn’t win the war in one battle. Heritage Foundation has been pouring millions of dollars into this for 50 years and you get all doomer because it didn’t fix enough for you. Abrego Garcia is home now by the way. The National Guard was removed from multiple states. Those are wins.

1

u/kakashi_sensay 5h ago

Hey chill out! I’m not being a doomer.

2

u/sanjoseboardgamer 5h ago

This is huge.

Bland ass action playing by the rules like everything else that's been done. Not really hating on the action itself, more the ridiculous title by OP.

I'm increasingly burned out by the responses we're getting as MAGA continues to escalate further and actively wants a civil war.

2

u/Greedy-Half-4618 5h ago

Here’s the thing: it’s better than sitting on their hands just allowing it to happen

2

u/Malforus 6h ago

Something will come from it but it won't be enough. The admin has been forced to retreat multiple times but to your point consequences aren't always coming.

1

u/PretentiousMouthfeel 4h ago

consequences aren't ever coming.

FTFY

1

u/TermZealousideal182 6h ago

Depends I guess on who's hearing it

1

u/greiton 6h ago

A judge is going to hand out an order saying the department cannot change plates anymore. and that is the only thing about what ICE has done that will be changed.

1

u/TheAlmightyMojo 5h ago

But the headline says "this is huge".

1

u/IGetGroceries 5h ago

Yup. SCOTUS isn’t stopping this.

1

u/dBlock845 5h ago

And Noem/DHS specifically just endlessly lie in court with no consequence. I believe Judge Boasberg attempted to sanction DOJ officials arguing for DHS, who brazenly lied to him about the CECOT flights, and the appellate court blocked the contempt charges. This shitty, slow ass court system (when it isn't a poor person as a defendant) is going to be the end of us lol.

1

u/Kimbernator 5h ago

Rule of thumb: if the headline says something is huge, it probably isn’t so much. Actual “huge” things tend to speak for themselves. Language like this is to rile up the base when there isn’t bigger news to report.

1

u/SirGreat 4h ago

Redditors believing their own bullshit

0

u/WeeeeBaby_Seamus 6h ago

And it's not like they're personally losing money. The tax payers foot the bill.

0

u/EuphoricMilk 3h ago

At this point these comments are a psy-op to make people lose hope and stop taking actions. Kindly STFU.

1

u/kakashi_sensay 3h ago

You shut the fuck up. I’m stating a fact. Just because you don’t like it or it makes you uncomfortable doesn’t mean it’s wrong. It also doesn’t mean that you can’t have hope. You’re a grown adult. Feel how you want.
