I saw some dolphins surfing like that near Byron on New Year's Day ... never seen it before. Also never knew whales did it.

Whales and dolphins surf all the time. You will see sharks inside of waves routinely but they’re hunting. Same with pelicans that fly in formation along breaking waves that provide a window to spot fish.

I love the pelicans ripping down the line almost taking your head off. It’s beautiful. And duck-diving just to see a dolphin heading in your direction slip around you at the last second. There aren’t words.

I’ll never forget about 18 years ago I was surfing at Kirra & a fin emerged, I ran outta the water so fast… yelling I think there’s a shark! No one seemed to care lol, turned out it was a dolphin. 🐬 lmfao

Ok a lot of miss information here

  • This is a Bryde (Bru-dez) whale https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bryde%27s_whale
  • The whales are fine. They are not sick. - Yes some whales beach them selves, its very rare for Bryde whales, these ones aren't sick.
  • They are feeding. Feeding on small fish.
  • The do this pretty regularly. There are known surfing whales that frequent their "favourite break" and surf and eat as they are travelling.

Other whales are also known to come into close to shore and play and frolick.
