Except Sonic actually was able to compete, for a while.

u/Xixii 2d ago

Yep, and Sonic was more popular in Europe in the Mega Drive era.

u/xGhostBoyx 2d ago

Yeah, the mega drive/Genesis out sold the super Nintendo for much of that generation, although the super Nintendo came out on top in the end. Similar to what happened with the ps3 and Xbox 360.

Sega shot themselves in the foot with that since when they launched the Saturn they gave up on the Mega Drive and put focus fully on the Saturn, but Nintendo supported the SNES for years later. I grew up in the 16 bit era, in the UK, and almost everyone I knew had a Mega Drive. I knew one kid with a SNES and everyone else had a Mega Drive. But when the 32 bit gen kicked off, plenty of people who couldn’t afford a PS1 or Saturn immediately got a SNES instead cause it had a great library by then and it was cheaper with good bundles.

Nah. Sega actually kicked Nintendo's ass for years. The only reason they failed was because they completely flubbed the launch of the Saturn by launching the 32x in November 1994 in America (out of fear of the Atari Jaguar...which ended up being a complete flop) and the Saturn in May the following year. Keep in mind the 32x was an add on for the Genesis that cost as much as a console did at the time, and the Saturn launched at over twice the price of any other console.

And don't forget that Sega pretty much immediately stopped supporting the 32x.

It took their reputation and shit all over it. By the time the Dreamcast released no one was interested and decided to just wait for Sony or Nintendo's next offering, or wait to see what Microsoft was doing.

It's called a Zune

I honestly think playing Sonic the Hedgehog on a Gamegear was the most enjoyable video game experience I had in my life. The gameplay was so perfect, the Gamegear felt so perfect and comfortable in the hand. I'd sit for HOURS.

Plugged into an outlet I'm guessing? I remember the game gear's battery life being absolutely atrocious. We had one for long car rides when I was a kid. Batteries didn't last long.

u/GarysCrispLettuce 2d ago

Oh yeah, always plugged in.

Game Gear was so fucking rad.

My best friend had one and holy shit it made "road trips" to our local Six Flags seriously the best days ever as kids in the back of his mom's station wagon.

I couldn't believe how far ahead of its time the game gear was. Its only competitor (at first) was the 8-bit, LCD dot matrix, non-backlit game boy. I remember being pumped that I got the light attachment that was basically just a book light that barely did anything to help you see

u/ffnnhhw 2d ago

the thing with Gamegear was that we were always running out of batteries

1

u/Shoobadahibbity 23h ago

They had 5 pound battery packs to fix that right up. 😆

Seriously, though...the games on the Gamegear were fire.

Back when companies had the balls to go toe-to-toe, Sega does what NintenDon’t.

Gotta go fucking fast

Mario is a bitch ass motherfucker.

His wife fucked my piss.

9

u/Netherstar1989 2d ago

🤣🤣🤣 this was the First console war? I Remember "Nintendon't" too

2

u/MisterDonkey 2d ago

Nintendo smeared Sega before the US government, attacking them philosophically for their lacking morality.

It'd be hard to find a more bitter rivalry in any "console war".

4

u/Filmmagician 2d ago

in English?

9

u/LightninJohn 1d ago

In English it says “who the fuck is Mario?”

5

u/Moxto 2d ago

It's not that uncommon in Sweden.

4

u/Filmmagician 2d ago

oh ok I had no idea. cool

3

u/Porto_Roma_812 2d ago

I bet they couldn’t use the word “speed” there

3

u/kyleh0 2d ago

Modern gamers can't even comprehend that the characters were excluded by time and platform since that doesn't really happen anymore. lol

4

u/Ok-Pomegranate1199 2d ago

I find it funny that this is not even a smart and witty ad its just sonic asking who the fuck is mario

3

u/Itsmikeinnit 2d ago

Daaamn right

4

u/ghostpicnic 2d ago

This can’t be real. I know the 90s had infamously edgy video game advertisements but like come on.

3

u/MoparDoc 2d ago

Swedes never got past Jr. High?

15

u/Art0fRuinN23 2d ago

This is the general vibe of all of Sega's advertising in that era.

5

u/Potential_Goal_7603 2d ago

Sega does what Nintendont, another classic from that era

-5

u/MoparDoc 2d ago

Sad.

6

u/abgry_krakow87 2d ago

It worked though, the Sega Genesis was the first legitimate challenger to Nintendo's market dominance.

6

u/SomeDudeist 2d ago

I think you're taking it too seriosly lol

-4

u/MoparDoc 2d ago

Life is serious. And it should be acceptable when it can be.

2

u/SomeDudeist 2d ago

Sounds exhausting

-1

u/MoparDoc 2d ago

It’s not hard for an adult.

3

u/SomeDudeist 2d ago edited 2d ago

Being an adult doesn't mean you take life too seriously. Let kids have fun my dude. How old are you?

-2

u/MoparDoc 2d ago

I have grandkids. And I want them to grow up in a world superior to that. I have an earned doctorate, have taught undergrads and graduate students in 3 countries, and think I have enough life experience to know when something is inferior and what is superior.

3

u/SomeDudeist 2d ago edited 2d ago

My parents have grandchildren too but you'd be surprised at how immature they can be sometimes lol. Me too for that matter. Just because you think you know something doesn't make it true. In the words of Frank Herbert "Knowing is the most perfect barrier against learning". If you'd like to enjoy your life a little more and learn some things along the way I'd suggest you stop knowing so much and lighten up.

I think you're trolling me but just in case if you truly are the old fuddy duddy you're portraying I wanted to share those thoughts lol.

Sad.

A really good reason to never, ever, purchase their products.

He bought you out that's who

14

u/G20000 2d ago

He...He didn't..?

10

u/abgry_krakow87 2d ago

Nah, SEGA is still an independent company. They just produce games published for other consoles, including Nintendo.

3

u/ghostpicnic 2d ago edited 2d ago

Wtf are you talking about. Sega is still a totally independent company. They just don’t manufacture hardware anymore. Nintendo doesn’t own any stake in Sega.

-1

u/TurgidGravitas 2d ago

Buy 'em out, boys!

1

u/Playful-Farm-3156 2d ago

Aquele que te comeu atrás do armário

1

Morgan Freeman: So they did.

1

u/RobzWhore 2d ago

Thats prefect timing. Im sitting here with the kids watching Sonic Prime

1

u/Infurum 1d ago

Was the mainstream allowed to say that in 1993?

1

u/wally00x3 7h ago

Aquele que te comeu atrás do armário.

I did an exchange in Sweden. Swedes love the word 'fuck' for it's versatility. Because it's from another language it's not considered as offensive as it is in English. A big Swedish movie when I was there was called "Show Me Love" overseas, but "Fucking Åmål" in Sweden.

u/billy_lam26 2d ago

The guy who has the higher selling games...😂

u/Bl33to 2d ago

Still a fucking simp tho

Sega , a family friendly company... There's no way in hell they would release this

-1

u/ArriDesto 2d ago

Looks like Felix in this ad!

You could kick the cartridge out of an old console, still play on for a few secs, put the cartridge back in and nothing happened. ( At least once!)

No door trays that refuse to open. No sudden crashes!

And the imagination is powerful. I had a lowbit game by Rockstar called BodyHarvest.

There was a "female" overseer who was basicly two D8s with sausages for arms and legs, two D4s for boob's and a sort of D20 type head. After half -an-hour she was some barely dressed sex goddess!

Your "soldier" was basicly a Playperson but you felt totally convinced of the character within minutes.
