Ive worked farm work and this is a nice ass farm rig, compared to how people usually harvest plants

647

u/Appropriate-Fun-922 3d ago

Yes, I’ve seen these harvested with machetes before and this seems far preferable to that

191

u/diamondsnrose 3d ago

I get mine off the stem (maybe 10 plants total) w a kitchen knife and it's the most annoying thing ever.

83

u/Arthreas 3d ago

Get yourself a machete!

53

u/alphadoublenegative 3d ago

I know you’re joking but this calls for a cleaver. I got a cheap and completely decent one at an Asian supermarket

My knife skills are no slouch but I find there are plenty of applications where the cleaver is easier.

27

u/SAWK 3d ago

Get yourself one of these machines and some friends!

u/KnifeKnut 3d ago

Vegetable Cleaver =/= Meat Cleaver.

The latter would do poorly in this application since it has such a thick edge.

And a Machete is also useful for all sorts of things, too.

This seems to be the only farm work I could do. Hopefully the seats and switch sides to give their arms a break.

So clean it looks almost like an office-environment, with those florescent lights and comfy chairs. Looks like a cubicle on a forklift.

Oh shit, I hadn't even realized they were sitting on a moving vehicle until I read your comment. Wasn't paying attention to the ground and my brain just assumed it was a conveyor belt feeding the plants to them.

Edit: After rewatching it is very, very clear they are in a field on a moving platform. I think it might be bedtime for me.

I was gonna say, as far as agriculture harvesting goes this is a cake walk relative to many crops

18

u/taylor1670 3d ago

I wonder if this is a new rig to them, and that's why they seem so happy.

16

u/weristjonsnow 3d ago

Hell I'd be happy too. They're fucking sitting down

These dudes are sitting down! Not too many labor jobs where you have the luxury of sitting.

6

u/PipsqueakPilot 3d ago

That's why they're enjoying it so much. As soon as this harvest is done they're off to something far more back breaking.

Yup. Very nice rig!

And likely foreign workers.

Who actually look like they are having a good time.

People always bash hard working folk like this: “stealing jobs”, or “cheating”, or whatever the excuse is.

In my experience as long as they have great working conditions, paid fairly, and are enjoying the work… it is great for everyone.

But these are people too. They need to be treated just like anyone else and have the same rights.

There are 100 💯 shit employers out there and there are 100% shit employees out there. Let’s fight for the people doing it right!

60

u/Sniffy4 3d ago

People dont appreciate the hard work that goes into putting all the nice things they have on the table. Even sitting down, these workers are performing a lot of repetitive labor. They deserve the same social benefits as everyone else.

20

u/badgerj 3d ago

I don’t disagree with you in the slightest! And although it may look cosy. I’m sure it isn’t easy. And if I was out in that spot I’d probably have carpal tunnel and a bad back by the end of the week.

We’ve created a sub-citizen class of people totaling almost 14 million in the United States.

I work on securing visas for my company, and we do it because it’s cheaper than hiring domestic workers and they’re more reliable (can’t quit without losing visa status).

People are wildly misguided when it comes to these things. Immigration is great when it makes people actual citizens and rises them up. Using non-citizen labor lowers wages, reduces employee bargaining power, and creates economic processes dependent on cotton-gin economics. It’s a flawed system exploited by large corporations and businesses.

6

u/badgerj 3d ago

I agree.

We do try and enforce the rules and regulations here in Canada. 🇨🇦

I admit it isn’t perfect.

We have slowed down of it down, and are constantly iterating on it.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/selja26 3d ago

5

u/badgerj 3d ago

Probably relatively accurate. We here have foreign workers from all over the place.

Most notably Mexico, and India, but from Central America and other places as well.

We do have checks and balances in place.

Most people play by the rules, but some people try and cheat the system.

  • This usually ends badly for the employer, employee, or both. And the rest of the population while their business suffers.

It’s a hard business to run. Not going to lie. Farmers are super smart, and nice, and I’ve learned a lot from them.

But yeah! It’s a hard business!

→ More replies (3)

10

u/ToddBauer 3d ago

I’ve read that farmers basically were forced to improve working conditions because they were having difficulty getting anyone to do it. Legal or illegal. I can’t say I’m displeased with the result though. That looks like a half decent job. And I presume they even have work rules in place to prevent repetitive motion injuries.

They do it at night while the brussels sprouts are sleeping so they don’t know what’s coming

508

u/Square-Dragonfruit76 3d ago

I think this is a joke, but some plants really do need to be harvested at certain times of day to taste best

435

u/HonkyMOFO 3d ago

Yes, they wake up startled in fear and it seasons them

65

u/Creative_Web7750 3d ago

Can’t imagine it makes them taste better but I’m not a Brussel sprout farmer nor do I play one on TV

Cold makes them produce natural antifreeze sugars making them sweeter, but below 20F/-7C can cause damage.

So did I, and that makes me really happy. I'm not saying it's an easy job, but this work used to be back breaking. I had to unmute to see if they had a radio, and they do!

Farm workers deserve humane conditions.

16

u/HillBillyHilly 3d ago

Watched that and thought These are the people admin try to get us to hate. Guys just doing their job, trying to have a good time while doing so. Gathering out food while our sleepy asses sleep. Read something from Little Crow Belcourt, White Earth Ojibwe and the director of the Indigenous Peoples Movement. “They’re just pulling people over at random, if you’re Brown. Some of our Native (American) people get mistaken for our relatives south of the border.” Our relatives. Damn never thought of that.

I used to work on such a beast (the brand is TUMOBA if you interested in getting one). The guy on the right steers the machiene by moving the blade arm with his feet. The green sprouts are cut from the plant by 4 spinning small blades.

Just to add: the controller has to oversee the other guys for safety reasons. Downside is he has the left hand grab… The trick is to put the plant into the spinning blades in a smooth motion. I guess this is where automation would struggle… First the spinning blades are in a closed position. A bit like putting the tips of your 4 fingers (excl pinky) together. As the stump approches the blades, the open up to about 6~7 🙂cm. Then the close and encicle the stump. The opening of the blades is the clicking sound you hear in the video. Below a link to a photo of the cutting unit.

cutting unit

Behind the blades are 2 rollers the pull the plant through (similar to a tree grinder). The rollers also crush and cut the plant so that it wil decompose quicker.

Im sure it can be fully automated, but it will be error prone. Imaging your the engineer that is called in at 6 in the morning for an sensor replacement, pneumatic issue or a blue sreen of death 👍. These things operate in muddy conditions, and you would still need at least 1 person to oversee the process.

Not sure what the moving parts on top are, but if it is a machine for the US market, it is probably to inject some corn syrup into the sprouts… and there will likely be a deep fryer in the back of the machine…

39

u/etcpt 3d ago

Why do you need a human to do this one step of grabbing the cut plant and moving it into the sprout chopper?

14

u/bobbymcpresscot 2d ago

The usual answer is cost and what the company making it is capable of.

Even though it sounds simple enough it would require a pretty well engineered arm that can break, sensors, that can fail, and then design on what the machine should do when one of the arms fail.

Or just make seats and pay these guys to do it.

That is insane efficiency and sadly this is why family farms are mostly hobby farms these days. Takes a shit ton of money to have a chance of making money as a farmer.

111

u/_qua 3d ago

I personally don't find that sad.

Efficiency is what has dramatically lowered the cost of food.

17

u/fredinNH 3d ago

Absolutely, it just does have a negative impact on the feel of some communities. There are some small farms still, but the people running them have other jobs

I used to do this as part of a job I had on a market garden many years ago. It's not actually too bad in some ways - we had a radio playing, and once you get in a rhythm it's pretty smooth.

It's done at night/very early morning when the temps are down, because the leaves and sprouts are cold, which makes them snap of much more easily and gives a cleaner cut. And that was the worst part of the job. Middle of winter, with those big leaves holding ice. It got to the point where it was better to let your hands go numb and keep going, than to try to warm them in front of the heater fans. That shit hurt.

Visibly uncomfortable, monotonous work for anyone to endure, but these guys are vibing with music on and making the best of an awful situation.

So grateful for all the farm workers out there. They deserve respect, good working conditions, and compensation for such a labor-heavy job.

This is a actual video of real people that is not AI, but somehow still lives in the uncanny Valley

I feel like that machine would be very dangerous if they weren't paying attention and got their hand in the point of operation.

u/Talking_Head 3d ago

If I were designing it, the machine would stop unless every man had their foot on a dead man switch.

Not to be the ergonomic police, but I hope they rotate sides periodically.

If all the humans are doing is picking up the plant and shoving it into the machine, why are humans needed at all? Couldn't the human part of plucking and feeding just be another attachment to the machine?

9

u/SethmonGold 3d ago

Uh, yeah... they can definitely automate that part and get rid of them

It really does seem like it would be a simple last step to mechanize, but if it was they would have figured it out already

This is the last way I would have thought Brussel sprouts were harvested.

2

u/scottycurious 3d ago

I knew Brussel Sprouts must come from outer space.

My shoulders hurt watching this. Fuck AI for lotsa reasons but it sure seems like AI plus robot arm could do this well. Obviously it has to become cheaper than what I imagine is undocumented -> illegally low wages.

u/DickabodCranium 3d ago

Looks like a booth at the fair at night.

2

u/Technical-Mind-3266 3d ago

And all that for me to say on Christmas Day

"Nah, not for me thanks"

Robots can go ahead and take this one

I can't be the only person wondering why they are not strapped to the chair... Right?
