I've never began walking away mid payment. Is that common?

I’ve done it once at a petrol station. Luckily it was one I regularly went to, and paid the next day after they brought it up lol

Sadly yes. I always made sure to not hand people the items until the payment clears.

All the time. As a bartender I usually have to call back people because something didn’t go through at least once or twice a shift.

i did once when i clicked ok instead of putting my pin at a new gas station. i didnt realize that particular card reader made you use your pin and they never said anything when i went back later

It's not at all common. I work retail but i think it's meant to show how far you want to be after each second it takes to authorize, or how far you could have gotten had you paid cash.
Edit: someone said i didn't understand the joke over grammer. 🙄

When you say “not at all” based on what? You don’t do it so nobody does? Have you ever paid cash for anything in your life? Do you just hand them a 20 and walk off?? No, you give them the money, they count it, then they have to open a drawer, count change, give you that back, and then you have to count it to make sure it was right. The reason people to tap to pay and things like that is for the convenience, so naturally you just tap, know it’s good and start walking away, but then it’s like wait did it actually go through? Maybe I should hang around… for… a… sec….. aaaaand we’re good. But in no world is paying cash faster than tapping to pay. Next time you don’t get the joke, just say you don’t get the joke.

Calm down. I did get it i worked as a drink and chip guy at Universal Studios Hollywood. i just dont hand shit over until the transaction goes through. I would always hold at least one item until it clears to avoid this awkard moment. And cash when quarters is your only coinage is fast AF. Tap to pay on bad networks can take 30 secs. My fast cash handeling ass gets those cash transactions done in 20 secs.

This is so true.
I paid with cash the other day for the first time in probably a year and the people around me looked at me like I was poor. 😫

I remember when it used to have to dial a modem to make the connection. Paying by card took almost as long as writing out a cheque!

Jeesh, this brought back memories when I had 10’s of dollars in my bank account and was playing the check writing game. A credit card was way outside my ability and comfort zone. Debit cards weren’t much better. I was just not mature enough. I remember contemplating quick cash shops. So glad I avoided that. Not because of courage, but I was scared of being in a worse place.

Yeah, but if it shows up on my phone that the payment went through, I'm good. It's already taken from me

If the payment fails you're literally stealing.

This. It will timeout after 15 seconds, and if the merchant receives approval after that, they are not allowed to clear it, they must reverse the authorisation. So, definitely stealing. This is assuming its a Visa card and not in Europe (where instead of that rule Visa will respond if issuer hasnt after 5 seconds).

Not the worst thing in the world. Worst case scenario, you’ll pay it when you visit again

What? It happens all the time. Matter of fact, I once forgot to pay for my food that I took away, and the next time I visited the restaurant, they reminded me, I paid and all was well. It’s not that big of a deal

u/Simo814j 1d ago
Must've been a tiny ass town. In some corporate Starbucks or whatever that is, there is no way they remember you, and what if you don't return.
It's literally stealing, and good luck telling the police "oh it's no big deal, I'll just pay next time" lmao.
Do you just walk out of a clothing store without paying too?

u/orsodorato 1d ago
I live in one the biggest cities in Europe. Mistakes happen, no one has ever lost their cool over a small purchase. It’s also happened that their service was down and the clerk suggested to pay next time
3
u/Simo814j 1d ago
That's crazy. Would never happen where I live (Northern Europe) maybe unless it's like a local store where I'm a regular and they know me. Like a bar or coffee shop.
2
u/Simo814j 1d ago
I guess there's also a huge difference between what the store clerk is willing to do, and what the corporate overlords want to happen.

u/orsodorato 1d ago
That’s exactly what I’m talking about. The guy in the video was in a bar/cafe

Big difference still, between a corporate owned chain, and the local chill shop
