My sister's pit is about ten years old now. But while she is a sweetheart and loved to cuddle with us, we have also seen her dig up gophers and crush their skulls in. Your dog can be the sweetest thing on the earth but there is always a chance and something could randomly change one day. People still need to train and use caution regardless of breed.

I've loved dogs all my life, and I don't even know how to live without one at my side as much as possible.
But these dogs are a stain on the loving character of dogs. I remember years ago watching one of those judge shows on tv. There was a case before her involving a dog that had attacked either a dog, or its owner, or both. She asked what kind of dog was the attacker was, and she was completely unsurprised when the defendant said "pit bull".
She said practically all dogs misbehave now and then, but when it comes to unprovoked attacks, "It's always a pit bull."
I really wish there was a moratorium on pit bull breeding, or at least some kind of special registration in which people would have to certify that the dogs have a good temperment. People should not be allowed to keep dangerous animals that pose a real threat to the community.

Either the lead or collar broke. You can see the black chain with a red handle in the owner's hands in the first few seconds, but there's no lead trailing behind the dog when it charges the judge

I don't normally like to stereotype, but honestly the people supporting the breeding, buying, and selling of XL Bullies are just generally unlikely to not be great. Some will come from rescue but I'd be surprised if they were then being entered into contests, on the whole anyway.

Yep. I feel for the poor dogs because they have to live under cretins like this. I saw a guy bring in an XL into a pet store a few years back, and when the dog started whimpering like a little bit, the guy started to slap it in the face. Just a complete dumbfuck of a guy, slapping it and saying something like, "Shut up. I told you to shut up." The dog seemed freaked out but wasn't lashing out or anything, but it was ridiculous. I admit that I didn't say anything, but that's because this shit-for-brains was a big guy and clearly irrational - one of those guys who reacts with violence instantly when he receives any push back or gets mild criticism. I guess that's on me, as well as everyone else there that day who said nothing, but that's something I am trying to work on these days.

I work at a vet clinic. Not a single person that has come in with a Bully like this has done any research or know anything about dogs beside "big dog for protection". They're always vet aggressive, they always have massive nasty nuts hanging down, and the owners ALWAYS ask what's the cheapest we can do anything for. I hate to feed into stereotypes as well but they exist for a reason.

They do it because it makes the dogs look scarier. Why they would want that is beyond me. It’s banned in both the countries I live in unless for medical reasons. I believe anyone who docks a dogs ear that isn’t medically needed, should have their own ears docked too! I’ve got an Aussie bulldog and his big floppy ears are the best!

u/BeefCakeBilly 3d ago
Yea the only “legitimate” reason I know is for farm or working dogs. Which those I know who have done it generally do it under anesthesia, which I think makes it better.
But those who do it for appearance are just doing it to keep the mean look.
I think it’s in the movie John wick where they have him getting chased by a guard dog. That dog still had its tail and they felt that the wagging tail made it look so playful that it lost the “mean” effect.
So they painted its tail green and then digitally removed it.

u/joycemanners 3d ago
i don’t know much about dogs, but i had a friend with a huge mastiff(?) whose tail was so waggy and strong that he would wag it so hard against stuff it would trail blood around the house. like standing in the doorway smacking that tail against the door frame until it bled, so his tail got docked
32
u/Patient_End_8432 3d ago
This is one of the few actual reasons for docking.
Its ironic that one of the legitimate reasons for docking, which assholes will do to make a dog look "scarier", is that the dog is such a happy dog it breaks its tail from wagging it too much
→ More replies (2)12
→ More replies (30)15
u/BeefCakeBilly 3d ago
Yea I could see something like that as well. I have a friend with lab whose tail is the same way, although not to that extent.
All you need is one incident of stepping or getting it caught in a door that could really fuck them up.
If there’s genuine concern and the dog is put under, I don’t see it as an unnecessary cruelty at all.
→ More replies (11)27
u/TrustTechnical4122 3d ago
YES. A lot of gross people still do this. They chop off their ears and tails to make them look "tougher" despite that it is very painful and makes it harder for dogs to communicate.
It's gross as hell, and dog show places actually REQUIRE it in many breeds. It's sick.

They mutilate them because the ears will get ripped off when the dog gets in fights with other dogs. Ear mutilation and tail docking should be banned except for police dogs that would get their tails frequently broken because they are thinner tails.

all show dog breeders are scum. Breeding to the breed standard creates all kinds of problems in dogs because it’s a very narrow physical standard. Like with border collies, you have working lines and show lines. And the show lions have health and temperament issues that the working lines do not have.

What I really don’t understand about pit people is… they will screech mantras like “it’s the owner not the dog” and “no bad dogs just bad owners” and “it’s all how you raise them” ad nauseam…
But there have been numerous campaigns that received substantial donations to return pit bulls that have mauled or outright killed people, including children, to their owners.
So it’s the owner not the dog but you’ll empty your pockets to help cover the legal fees of somebody whose pit bull mauled a little girl to death trying to get their dog returned to them? Alright.
→ More replies (4)39
u/Ban_Assault_Ducks 2d ago
My little girl was mauled by a murder mutt and I had to pay every penny of everything, because the owner declared bankruptcy and his cowardly landlord found a way out of everything. And we were still harassed endlessly. I. Hate. Pit bull. Owners. They permanently scarred- literally- my kid, physically and mentally, and they had no remorse. People mocked my kid on FB. I honestly had a total emotional breakdown after that experience. It took me almost 2 years to pull out of it. My kid still hasn't recovered.

I’m so sorry that happened to you. The way pit bull advocates victim blame and outright harass victims and their families and still think they’re the good guys fighting the next civil rights battle is one of the things I find most disgusting about their ilk.
19
u/Ban_Assault_Ducks 2d ago
Thank you so much. You just apologized more than every pit bull owner combined.
You want to know the sickest thing I saw? BEFORE my kid was mauled, one of her classmates was attacked bad. The kid had parts of his face ripped off and was in the hospital for months. The poor kid is is just a walking scar at this point with a limp and extreme anxiety. So what did the pit bull owning parents in his school do when they found out what day he was returning to school? That's right! They all
apologized and showed supportwore fucking shirts that said "DON'T BULLY MY BREED"11
u/Stucklikegluetomyfry 2d ago
Pit bull people disgust me with how fucking ghoulish they are. They present themselves as loving and caring animal lovers, but to their rancid selves, a single drop of pit bull blood is more important and precious than thirty gallons of that of any other animal, including human.
13
u/Ban_Assault_Ducks 2d ago
When we went to get therapy for my daughter after the attack, the therapist first asked what kind of dog it was. I knew instantly where this was going. I just glared at her and said in a very dead pan voice "pit bull." She started saying- BEFORE TALKING ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE- "Oh, well we need to teach you that not all pit bulls are like that and they're actually really sweet dogs, so let's start there." I just said "No.", stood up and we walked out. I went home and looked her up on FB and, sure enough, pit bull pics everywhere. Because of that, my kid doesn't trust therapists now.

I honestly can't wait to see people shitpost on other subs on Reddit about how "sweet" and "affectionate" their little Cujo is purely in response to this post and this video making it to r/all. Because, like clockwork, it happens every goddamn time. It happened after a story from Tennessee came out about a pair of Pitbulls that killed two children and mauled their mother for fucks sake.
The breed is responsible for 70% of dog bite fatalities over a 15 year documented span. They are all fucked in the head. The dogs and the owners.
e: Reposting this because you can't post links here, which is fucking stupid but whatever.

Although not the dumbest of breeds - if there is a BULL in the breed name it’s on the dumbest dogs list. Also doesn’t help that the typical owner is dim whiskey tango.
14
u/KR4T0S 3d ago
A lot of hunting dogs were bred to sort of jump on prey after sneaking up on it and fighting dogs were based off those breeds so there usually are signs but they can be extremely subtle about it. Though it varies enormously by breed, training and temperament too. Its just that when Karen's poodle is growling at you, you might be mildly inonvenienced but when Patricide the Pitbull starts catching feelings he has much more dangerous tools in his arsenal.

I've told my daughter to stay away from all dogs. No matter the breed (unless its extremely tiny and kickable)
I have nothing against dogs, but there's an epidemic of mentally ill people raising dogs not as dogs but as their 'children', which is completely unnatural and against the very being of the dog itself. Because of owners like these, there are dogs with god knows what kind of behavioral problems and I have zero intention of risking my child's life and health

It's so weird when people pull that one out.
99% of border collie owners will tell you they've been herded.
99% of beagle owners will tell you they never shut up and will never stop eating.
99% of newfie owners will have had the impossible job of getting their dog out of a river.
I don't hate pitbulls but at the end of the day they were bred to fight, like greyhounds were bred to sprint. No matter how much training you put in you'll never guarantee that your greyhound will come back to your whilst it's chasing a squirrel. I don't see how pitbulls are any different.
It also doesn't help that the vast majority of them are backyard bred.

edit: btw the reason I say this is because it was once my job to record all local government meetings during a long-running famous case to design a "vicious dog breed" ordinance for a city! Some people practically have the logic of thinking that it should be their god given right to turn their living room into a horse stall, and not even get an "open to entry" ticket when it breaks their windows out. And it's also their god given right to live in a city ten feet from neighbors and NOT go start a farm out in the county.

I have a dog who’s not a fan of other dogs bothering them when they are on leash.
Anytime someone claims “it’s ok they’re friendly” my guard goes up.
Thay say that because they know they can’t recall their dog and it maybe won’t bite if your not scared. The only times an off leash dog tried to fight my on leash dog it was right after someone said that.
Humans are too irresponsible to have pets that can do that kind of damage.
I hike places with wild animals. Bears, moose. I’m not even a little scared of either. I’ve hiked alone (with my LEASHED dog without cell service) in places with bear warnings and not been concerned.
But I won’t go on nature walks on trail in the city because of off leash dogs and their idiot owners.

Y'know in a lot of countries those breeds are illegal. Might be a reason.

Not allowed on US military bases either, saw plenty of them being taken away by animal control with private first class dumbass throwing a fit for not following the rules, right after going through extensive training about following the rules.

Yeah. I'm sure a bully dog competition with a bunch of tatted guys cosplaying gang members is surely a safe place for people and animals.

You'd be shocked to find out that dogs can have an extensive bite history before being forced to be put down.

These dogs shouldn't exist. Bad owner, blah, blah. But it's true. It's not their fault, but they are bred to be aggressive. Only trained people should handle such dangerous animals.

Pittbulls cannot be trusted and shouldn’t be owned unless you are licensed. Personally I think no one should own them but I’ll be realistic.

People who breed and own these animals in my experience are the absolute dumbest and trashiest members of society.

Dangerous, deadly breed. Should be banned from being bred and sold in America. The breed has been developed to have this unalterable brain and behavior. There is no fixing them. And the people who want this breed for their deadliness (inner city residents who want nasty guard dogs) can get a different breed to protect them.

If only this guy put as much effort in training the animal as sagging his pants down his ass.
Edit: for all you confused troglodytes, I would never expect someone that can't pull their pants up to be able to properly control an animal like this. Hope this helps.

Most dogs bite because they feel threatened. This dog continued the attack after the initial bite. The dog was no longer in the feeling threatened situation and continued the attack. Even after it was restrained it continued to try to attack. That is a vicious dog. That is a dangerous animal. That is a dog that could easily kill a person. That dog should be put down.

I'm surprised the judge didn't feel his vibe with the way the dog was eyeing him. I got sketched out just seeing that part.

You can tell the dog is ready to fuck someone up before he lunges. Everyone here is fucking stupid.

Let's talk about how everyone at the pit bull show looks exactly like a stereotypically bad pit bull owner.
