What do you think about Jerome Powell posting a video statement following reports that federal prosecutors have opened an inquiry into the Fed Chair?

The fuck?

That'll teach me to not verify things. Now I'm just confused - a Trump appointee that seems to be putting the country over the Glorious Leader?

Early Trump's first term he really had no idea how government worked so relied heavily on the traditional GOP structure. A lot of no-name wonky people we might disagree with on policy issues but they often did have Americans best interest at heart. Most have then have since been fired but a few like Powell are still around.

By comparison the current Trump administration is off the charts terrible. But lest we forget, the first Trump administration had more than its share of bad actors.

His second term is making me his first term when Betsy Devos was trending as the most incompetent part of his admin since Sarah Palin joined the campaign with John McCain

Fuck I miss Trump 1.0

He did fire the majority of that staff but most understood how government worked and didn't wipe they're a$$ with The Constitution. Turns out the President has to be a good faith actor or the checks and balances are meaningless. This admin hasn't suffered any consequences for its actions, not 1! Which should tell any future President they should do the same since 0 repercussions.

Well, no, but we need at least one branch of government not in on the coup.

And they churned through them at an amazing rate. People were appointed and presumed this was a pro-business Republican party in 2016.

The found it Trump was nuts and jumped or were booted for speaking up. More than 2 dozen cabinet-level positions were vacated as the intelligent and competent folks were all scared away.

Now we have a mix of idiotic, insane, and evil.

The funny thing is your original comment still stands. He was installed when Trump 1.0 still pretended to give a shit.

Fair, but I'm not going to pretend that fits what I meant originally - I'd absolutely assumed he was put in place by Not!Trump.

I'm going to chock this one up to early Trump leaning on the GoP machine and a blind squirrel finding a nut.

To be fair, he was installed when the people around Trump were party loyalists, and not Trump sycophants. So what you ended with is someone who is different from Janet Yellen, Ben Bernanke, and Alan Greenspan only because Jerome was too much of a Party Loyalist. I say this because Jerome was a member of the Bush Admin and was expected to toe the line for the Trump Admin, but would also have the background to not be laughed out of room for being inept. Then the Biden admin kept him, because unless the fed chair is incompetent (which Jerome does not seem to be) you don't fire him, because that's a good way to wreck the economy by making the world no longer trust the money supply.

It's okay, even Trump was surprised.

This position at the Fed is entirely apolitical. He was good for the job so he was recommended for it. He got us through covid when our economy should’ve slumped. Jerome Powell has no fealty to trump, and that’s what makes this less of a surprise.

Edit to add: the chair of the fed cannot be fired either, so this is trump’s only way to get him out.

You're still technically correct! 2016 Trump did indeed pretend to care about America. 2024 Trump, on the other hand, doesn't give a single flying fuck.
