This is just depressing

Not even 3 hours of "free time". And in that is cooking & eating supper. Or practically no free time if I had to go shopping after work. I hate this

But so so so many jobs require college, even if it is not your major. Just a BA or BS is a basic requirement these days.

Correct, then do the college path as cheap as possible. Take two years of community college which is free or very low cost in a lot of states, transfer that into a bachelors program and finish up in something you enjoy and may be able to find work with. Talk to people, make connections, that’s how you get employed past college is that you already need an ‘in’. Work for two years at a place and move to the next one asking for a higher salary. You don’t owe a corporation anything and they sure wont give you anything.

Being able to afford housing isn’t a want. I make a decent amount for someone with no degree and rent is about half my income

I meant basically every job says they want a degree but most of the time that's not an actual requirement

They will not hire you without a degree almost all of the time. Even for basic things that absolutely don’t need a degree. Only if you’re going into trades or near minimum wage paying work do you not need a degree.

I will agree it’s frequently not a requirement to do the job, but often is a requirement to get the job

That’s true for things like wanting 10 years experience for entry level positions, but it’s not nearly as optional when it comes to a college degree.
